The way I read this is that in the past couples basically kept their overhead expenses low enough to be covered by one income. Now, most households have two incomes and spend accordingly, so if they are suddenly reduced to one it's devastating. Same principal could be applied if both spouses WANTED to work, it would just take budgeting according to only one income.

I ended up in the hospital due to anorexia when I was 14 after being shunned socially because I went through a chubby phase after I hit puberty.. I just bought a 1700+ square foot duplex on my own. The home can actually be used as a single family or a duplex. My kitchen is huge. The home was built in 1880 and has high ceilings with historic plaster walls, and the house has a two car garage that was once an attached barn that has been retrofitted. I absolutely love my home and owning my own property. Turns out I'm very handy too. Not even a single regret here.

One way to combat this that I have found to be somewhat effective is just to not even entertain rationalizing. Make the conversation about the specific behavior you want to see ceased and don't explain yourself beyond, "X behavior makes me feel uncomfortable. I want it to stop." That is all the reason you need realistically. Removes the opportunity to even debate the "why" it makes you feel uncomfortable.

Does he take time to actually get to know you or is your time together spent on activities/listening to him monologue about himself and his life? Yikes, did we date the same man? This happened to me almost verbatim until I was discarded on Valentine's Day out of the blue about six months in for no reason. It was such a bizarre experience. One time I simply bought lunch as a nice gesture in appreciation for taking me out most of the time and he became almost angry at me.

This really is a good rule on boundaries in general. When I was supervising female staff in a male correctional facility I would always tell them to come in with hard boundaries. It's much, much, much easier to soften a rigid boundary than to try to strengthen a weak one.
