Considering that we did the whole room in hardiebacker (read: concrete panels), though the thin ones, it really was a two-person job to put those things up due to having a sloped ceiling being right under the roofline. I figured that the shell of the room could be left in just about forever and a future owner could adorn it however they pleased, and as long as there was no moisture infiltration, the wall was doing its job. Do it once, do it right.

I did a bathroom renovation back in 2011 Lemme tell you, that ancient thickset with mesh is a bastard to scrape up. I'd spend weeks sitting on the toilet with a edged metal rod and a heavy hammer chipping away at it before ready to pull out the sink cabinet and toilet. Incremental approach is best at times. I hired a "buddy" to do the interior finish work and do second hands on plumbing. I just recently replaced the cheap toilet from that renovation with a more efficient TOTO.
