Well mostly in the evening when I'm back from work. There were the occasional times when I'd stay up all night, especially when the sky was clear. As far as an amateur perspective, it really depends on what you're looking for. For example if you wanna see more details on planets, you'll need a good quality refractor telescope. A reflector telescope is used more in astronomical research. You can read about those as well to figure out which one interests you.
