The Ritual is a horror movie on netflix, focused around five dudes who grew up together fulfilling their late friend's wish to go on a wilderness backpacking trip.

That is EXACTLY the point of community contribution. For example, if you live in a country with socialized medicine/social security, everyone gives a percentage of their earnings to it, so that people who normally couldn't afford medical expenses, could. This is because everyone can end up accruing medical expenses. People pay into a pool, if those people need to access the pool they use it. It is unethical to force people to pay into a pool that they're barred from accessing if needed. You can'…

I am a feminist, and I like to think that my views closely align with the vast majority of feminists. I do not condemn all men. Based on your second sentence, I think your first sentence is incorrect (specifically the vast majority part). 😅

It's a facetious method of showing people the flaws in their ideas. pobretano isn't actually suggesting following through on such a claim, but the possibility shows the obvious gap in thinking.

If you haven't already, I suggest perusing the /r/MRRef subreddit linked on the sidebar. There are a lot of references there from solid sources.
/r/MensRights01/08/17 06:34 PM

So the issue is that the studio is sacrificing profits to let the writers/director tell the story they want to tell. I know a lot of people complain about the exact opposite - when studios meddle and make their media easier to consume but less compelling. Maybe it's an issue for the studio, but is it an issue that we consumers have to care about?
/r/MensRights16/07/17 05:36 PM

Even if it were true, there's no obligation for media to kowtow to any ideology's sensibilities. What would the issue be, specifically? I couldn't care less if a movie had no male voices - I just wouldn't be interested in the movie. Is the issue that the studio is cutting out a sizeable demographic they could have pulled in?
/r/MensRights16/07/17 05:29 PM

I'm probably getting whooshed here, but there difference is that you choose feminism, but you don't choose your characteristics at birth.
/r/MensRights09/07/17 05:58 PM

That is indeed a logical conclusion.
/r/MensRights27/06/17 04:25 PM

Others have said the obvious stuff, so I won't repeat it. Instead, I'll speculate that a big reason the project was accepted and you found success was because you gave the TERF the last word. I think if you gave the last word to the egalitarian, or even the naive feminist, you'd have received much harder pushback.

I'd say the same thing I said in my original comment. Why are gender/race only driving services wanted in the market? The irrational fears people nurture are unhealthy for society, but I don't fault entrepreneurs for meeting demand.
/r/MensRights07/06/17 05:36 PM
6

If there's a market for it, I think it's perfectly okay for someone to fill that market desire. Why there's a market for it, now that's the thing I have a problem with.
/r/MensRights07/06/17 04:28 PM

While I agree this is a problem we should think about, there's a thought I've had recently that's causing me to struggle keeping consistency in my views. With the wage gap, we say (rightly) that it's misunderstood because it's caused by individual choices women and men make. With education gaps, isn't it the same thing - people making different choices with their education?
/r/MensRights01/06/17 11:26 PM

I don't believe you understand the phrase. In this case "trust" means that you give the claim just enough credence to investigate and "verify" its factualness. It advocates making no arrests until evidence makes it clear what truly occurred.

In America, when women got the right to vote, so did at least 5 million men who previously did not have that right. Edit: The relevant point I'm making is that details like this in history are often ignored or misunderstood, and that also likely applies to "having a say where their kids went."

The first one is "Someone needs to put a bullet in this lady already." The second didn't have its contents displayed, as it was removed by automoderator. one right women don't have in the US or Western world that men do? While I agree that this is a right women should have, it doesn't meet the criteria since men also don't have any reproductive rights.

Exactly, this sub has an absurdly high tolerance for comments. It takes a lot of effort to get them removed by the mods, though frequently posts get downvoted instead.

Except feminism is literally built on a marxist framework. Not the case for MRM (which has no underlying framework).
/r/MensRights13/04/17 06:52 PM

Corrected the fragment, it was due to rewriting that section a few times. It still sounds to me like you're arguing for different standards of responsibility based on what's between someone's legs. Especially when science can now also allow people to choose which bits they have, I don't see that as a sustainable way forward for society. If one group acquires a new right, it makes sense that we'd look for other groups to acquire comparable rights. Is that really such an "ugly head"?

What you're saying here pushes a violation of a woman's right to bodily integrity. If a woman is capable of raising a child, but would financially depend on her partner as a result (as it almost universally does), and that partner is free and clear to say "Fuck you, I don't want a child, so I'm leaving", then guess who has no choice but to get a medical procedure she didn't want. This contradicts your position earlier about how stupidity/mistakes have consequences regardless of gender. The mista…

Okay, I'll hold your hand through this. Why is that valid and not irrational juxtaposition? However, many feminists believe in Patriarchy Theory, or even Kyriarchy Theory. These theories are based on the concepts of privilege - male privilege in the case of Patriarchy, and intersecting privileges in Kyriarchy that account for gender, ethnicity and other factors. While there may have been an argument for male privilege at one point in time, many within the MRM do not believe that male privilege i…

The logic here works as follows: Women have reproductive rights. Men do not. Women and men should have equal opportunity. To that end, there are two options: (a) Advance men's reproductive rights, or (b) rescind women's reproductive rights. Given the options, the former is better for humanity/society. FWIW we're also arguing for a fair way to allow the father to opt out of parenthood. Doing so within a short timeframe such that the potential mother can weigh whether she can provide for the poten…

/r/MensRights27/03/17 10:39 PM

If you see that as a personal insult, I'm worried about how you'd take a real one. Indeed, I've laid out the argument for why content like this is relevant. I've led you to water, so to speak. How you interpret the information is up to you.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 10:37 PM

You stated you don't understand why feminism is at odds with men's rights and demanded an explanation as to why. The sidebar's FAQ has such an explanation. I'm beginning to suspect you're being intentionally obtuse.

The only argument that should be required in favor of absolving men of responsibility is them admitting they're not ready to be a parent. The same level of responsibility by which we allow women to absolve their parental obligations. It would be anti-feminist to disagree - it's an argument for equality between the sexes after all.

Seems to me you're cherry picking the worst arguments people make for male reproductive rights. Simply put, women have choices when it comes to deciding to become a parent. Men do not have any choices in this regard. That's fucked up. Since it seems to be an argument you already understand half the point of, consider the notion of bodily integrity. A man has sex with a woman with an understanding that birth control is being used and that a child is not a viable outcome. Through deceit or neglect…

What exact "ignorance" is typhonblue perpetuating? Typhon has been a member of this community for years, and has a reputation for drilling through the BS in studies to find the actual facts and figures. She's got a reasonable criticism of the study at hand, and if you don't understand the context of the criticism she seems very willing to explain herself. I'm surprised to see Typhon slandered as ignorant here, of all places.

I have said this before and I'm saying it again. If the movements are to work together, BOTH need to change not just MR. The reason a lot of anti-Feminism stuff is posted here is because of Feminism's resistance to some of the reasonable activism MHRA strive for (eg pursuing default joint custody). In an ideal world I'd love to see this sort of thing, and honestly I'm still okay with it. The troubling thing is that we don't see any corresponding charities directly for the invisible over 60% homeless population.
/r/MensRights14/03/17 04:44 AM

It sounds like you want more of a critique of feminism than a focus on men's rights, so I'd suggest having men's rights be a smaller part of it and instead focus on how feminism undermines women. Obviously keep some of the men's rights threads intact, but framing issues as women's issues will get your extremely liberal audience to at least hear what you're saying instead of instantly going insane.

Yeah, I wonder if there are trolls in this very conversation. There's certainly no evidence that our education system is inundated with male-haters. That isn't indicative of misogyny any more than use of "player" or "dick" is indicative of misandry. (Okay someone could probably come up with better words, but the point roughly stands.) If this were to claim that 90% of the instances were male, we'd be decrying the methods used. They don't consider the context of those words, use of such individual words isn't confirmatio…

I was specifically referring to the title on reddit. Statutory rape is a form of rape performed on minors, so the article got it right. We should be consistent with our arguments, and we frequently call out media that downplays rape of males as "sex" so we should follow our own definitions.
/r/MensRights04/05/16 01:20 AM

We frequently complain about media calling statutory rape of young boys "sex," so this post's title really should refer to the action as statutory rape rather than sex. That said, this 23 year old was a person with rights, and unjustly had his life taken from him. No matter how much of a scumbag people think he is this was not justice - merely revenge - and his murderers and custodians should have the law applied to them in appropriate measure.

Yep, that makes more sense. I dunno if it differs from the proper legal terms, but the colloquial phrase that seems most appropriate to use is "beyond a reasonable doubt." That being the standard used both for accusations of rape and accusations of false allegations.

More or less. The popular notion these days is that leveraging selective service = political suicide = selective service is "just a formality" and men have the right to vote. But refusal to sign up means (a) lack of voting privileges (b) lack of financial aid for education (c) ineligibility for government jobs (d) up to $250,000usd fine and (e) up to 5 years in prison. So... not much choice but to sign our lives away - our own form of social suicide.

Understandable, and tbh I didn't actually look at any of the sources. It could be that the 62% was the non-hispanic white population as a whole. You're losing the context of what the % means. The original stat was "90% of false rape accusations against black men from from <some population> (white women)". So specifically we're looking at populations and asking "what would we expect this stat to be?" For some reason in the U.S the police have the idea that they are above the law. It's shit like the 'blue code of silence' that anything was allowed to happen in the first place. If police want people to respect them again then they have to start earning it back, one little bit at a time. You have been shadowbanned Wow, I guess the police are above criticism on reddit. The thing I don't like about "check your privilege" is how presumptuous it is. For example, you mentioned that you've never had to deal with sexual harassment. That it's a privilege of being male. There are a significant number of males who are sexually harassed, but others presume that they never had to deal with this because they are male. Those people dismiss his opinions on sexual harassment out of hand because he is a male, despite him actually dealing with it. Or a male studies the shit ou…

I've been noticing your comments here in /MR over a few threads and its my opinion that you're taking the 'anti-feminism' too personally. When MRAs rail against feminism and feminists, it's really three types of frustration rolled into one term. Tumblr feminism. This one is pretty obvious. People who legitimately support ridding the world of 90% of all males and using the rest as breeding cattle. People who have a genuine hatred of males as a gender. People who believe wholeheartedly in Patriarc…

The wage gap isn't 'proven' by your source. It leaves out many factors, one obvious and crucial one being "number of hours worked." While there is argument for an earnings gap, a wage gap has been demonstrably false.

But the greatest number of rapes committed against men take place in prison... where they are also done by men. I don't know how much percentage male rape victimization occurs in prison, but forced to penetrate happens at similar rates to penetrated by force ie rape.

To be fair they pay for their own training. How exactly are they doing this if they don't have a steady income? It sounds most likely that someone else (likely a working husband) is on the hook for the debt. That's on top of his obligations to earn a college fund for any children they have, and retirement funds, and mortgage, and etc etc. Heap an extra 100k on all of that for a PhD that doesn't get used.

Really enjoyed the article up until the end: Rape is an especially heinous crime, and heinously unfair -- it is mostly something that stronger men do to weaker women. How can we pile on an extra dose of unfairness -- by failing to prosecute so many of the crimes? For spending so long saying "we don't have accurate statistics" the article sure does get this statistic wrong.

From the comments: This article is a perfect example of using the straw-man strategy to 'win' your argument. Looking through the comments, people have pointed out a lot of issues with the study and how it arrived at the 42% figure. It is very likely not actually that high. It would require a much less biased sample (eg a random one instead of pre-selecting based on what magazines people read) to make a strong claim of the population's behavior.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he wrote a piece where he parodied a feminist article using reversed language. Though it was satire (and was labeled as such at the top of the piece) several feminist sites quoted it and claimed they were true beliefs and thus urged their readers to not visit the page they quoted. This happened a couple of years ago when I wasn't a part of the movement yet, I'm just basing this on what I heard/read a while back when I first heard about it.

The feminist idea that someone's body is only their concern always is foolish. Parents do have the right to make decisions for their children Parents do have the right to make decisions for their children. Hopefully they make educated and moral decisions for their children. You mentioned that you'll have your future son circumcised - would you mind explaining your reasoning as to why?
/r/MensRights14/08/14 02:55 AM

My point is that there aren't statistics out there about it because no one is measuring how many fathers are "giving up" on custody. I'm not in a position to survey thousands of divorcing fathers, so I can't generate reliable numbers on my own. You're right that it is hearsay, but there is some common sense behind it.
/r/MensRights07/08/14 02:30 AM

Wow, that's a fantastic counterpoint!
/r/MensRights06/08/14 02:53 PM

This is actually a misconception feminists use quite often. Only when men think they have any chance at success will they fight for it, thus skewing the statistic. If men always fought for primary custody they would lose much more than they win - your claim is only "correct" because of the pre-selection of cases. Custody battles are always expensive, and when you've already had half your earnings removed it is hard to afford court.

But what is the point of raising male issues in a "feminist space"? That could be seen as derailing the conversation. These things make people feel unsafe, not just women. Men are more frequently the victims of stranger violence than women. I, a man, ride public transit every day. I would feel very unsafe if someone (of any category) was staring intently at me; and if a person was masturbating during that; or if someone started following me; or started grabbing at parts of my body; etc. Women do not have a monopoly on feeling uncomfortable or unsafe in public.

Bigger movements or not, you could tell in the video that people recognized that the girl stole his wallet. From the twitter thread: Remind me when men didn't have the right to vote, own property or have rights to their own bodies? I don't use twitter, but someone should explain that men only got universal suffrage in 1865 (before that they were required to own land to cast a vote). That women were able to own property just as much as men were. And that men still have less rights to their own bodies than women.

It isn't about both being at one extreme or the other. I think its very reasonable to expect the resources allocated to Mary's Place to apply equally to the basic human needs of both men and women in need. Only once those basic human needs are met (for both sexes) should the luxuries be provided. If that means that Mary's Place can cater to everyone at its current standards then awesome! But its very likely that the standards would have to go down somewhat to support the additional population.

Rape isn't an overwhelmingly female problem. Just as many men (in the US) are raped. Have you even read anything on the sidebar? Besides. Even if you contend that an issue isn't gendered because of who its victims are, if a man is not afforded his basic human rights, it is a men's rights issue.

Thank you for this comment. I was under the impression that in most/all states a person under the influence of alcohol is unable to consent. While you're here, why is that such a common misconception?
/r/MensRights15/10/13 03:38 PM

Honestly, it depends on whether or not you believe that a drunk person can still consent to sex. There are people in this sub who believe they can, there are others who believe they cannot. Since this is still a controversial and unresolved issue, its hard to come down with an objective "he cheated" or "he was sexually assaulted." Under existing laws, he was sexually assaulted. But this conversation is in the social realm, not the legal realm.

This subreddit is about activism towards changing that aspect of society. This thread in particular is advocating for giving support to men. I don't know your background, but I've seen a few of your other posts here lately and I'd appreciate it if you'd tone down the doom and gloom.

Radical feminists have done a good job of poisoning the well against the MRM. Its pretty hard to change people's minds, especially in an environment like universities where its dangerous for people to critically think.

Not defending the article or the author exactly, but here's why I think she likes Jen Yu as a character. Jen is a "strong female character" but she has serious flaws, weaknesses, and personality issues that make her character more complex. In this way, though she isn't as likable in the story, one can appreciate the character's existence. I hypothesize that appreciation of the more complex female character is what the author meant.

On the one hand, I see these changes as giving more power to male victims. On the other hand, I can't actually believe that they'll be listened to despite this part: The federal government has put universities on notice that they need to take any complaint, however little merit it may seem to have, very seriously.

Not the person you replied to, but remember the scope of this discussion: we're talking about teenage pregnancies. Often the "men" in this situation are not yet adults. At that age, it is very rare for a boy to want to be a father, let alone for him to be properly ready to be one. We shouldn't be referring to "men" and "women" - we should be referring to "boys" and "girls".

What? Even if everything is going "exactly right" ie a normal date, this publication regards that as acquaintance rape - essentially assuming that the initiator of a date is a psychopath manipulator (or schrodinger's rapist). Sure, it isn't attempting to describe a normal dating situation, but all its wordings point to exactly that.

You would have to be quite dim not to know the difference between a couple agreeing to be alone together for sex, and a psychopath that has orchestrated consent-less isolation through manipulation. Without knowing a person's frame of mind they look the same from the outside.

"You won't be very happy with me," the principal recalled the boy saying. Its sad that the presumption is that boys will make people angry by reporting crimes committed against them. It's the same as in the restaurant industry where a LARGE majority of the servers are female. This lawsuit actually sets a reasonable precedent that the restaurant industry's discrimination isn't lawful. Sure it might not be an issue you care about as much, but it is an issue that affects men. Especially for men who are unemployed, getting a fair shake in the job market is a very important issue.

Since you seem to know much more than I on this subject, can I ask you a question or two? It makes sense that you can't waive child support, but can you have a clause that either regulates how child support is doled out (ie proportional to visitation or something)? Can you have a clause that mitigates such payments (ie in ADDITION to state-mandated child support payments, the custodial parent will pay the noncustodial parent some amount)?

Posts like this one are a great reminder to this community that we cannot be careless with generalizations. Too often posts and comments in this subreddit put words in the mouths of all women, eg "women are psycho golddiggers." We do the same with the label feminist. While some population of women are as crazy as such posts say, we should remember to append asterisks to them. And gigglymexicans' post is a reminder of that.
/r/MensRights19/02/13 06:56 PM

Sorry for that last sentence, it was rude of me to put words in your mouth. Religion might be viewed differently, but it doesn't detract from my point; you still have specific populations of the university being "attacked" by words and ideas. This is an argument I would give after being told that such a topic cannot be discussed.

I don't know about your collegiate experience, but on my college's campus there were Atheism discussions that spewed verbal venom at Christianity, and Christians that soap boxed that Atheists are going to hell. To some extent I agree with you, but when gender discussions happen (which as an MRA is something that will come up) feminists are quick to speak up and defend their misguided views. I don't think MRAs are specifically seeking to "attack feminists," rather they are seeking to raise awareness of issues that feminists want to quiet, and MRAs aren't backing down as quickly as they used to.

Critics of women in combat argue that culturally, the prospect of women being drafted might make the country reluctant to go to war. This is the kind of disposability we're up against. The Pentagon's decision is definitely a win for the MRM. Perhaps we'll even get selective service revisited as a whole, but they won't be able to limit it by sex any longer.

Do you think men have a higher statistical 'chance' of being raped than women? The only credible sources I've seen show that the rate is roughly 50-50 in the general population. (That's based on the CDC reports.) Though I believe male victims are less likely to report sexual assaults, it is very difficult to say "who gets raped more", and I honestly think that's the wrong question to be asking. Ergo, that isn't the poster of choice to put up.

With normal English verbiage and definitions you'd be right, but for whatever reason the phrase "consent of the victim" does not apply to a man "made to penetrate." I think it is because the male isn't the one being penetrated and thus isn't being penetrated by the sex organ of another person. OctopusNSquid's comment seems to already answer your question, if implicitly. I also think there needs to be a emphasis on helping men feel comfortable coming forward... A woman would never rape a man with the intention of getting pregnant? I'm not so sure, considering there are many documented cases of such behavior (albeit "forced to penetrate =/= rape" bs). While the context does somewhat alleviate this ignorance/acceptance of the double standard, it is still wrong and paints men in an unequal light.

Men don’t have to think about where they sit. It’s a non-event. Women and children do have to think about it because they live in a society where rape and assault are common and rarely defended against. I am appalled that my/our country's legal system is incentivized more towards having "perfect" incarceration records than it is towards upholding justice.

No deviation in red pens, more deviations in blue pens. Red pen not a pedophile. Granted, this picture isn't a strong indicator of anything, but it does show maybe some kinds of social preconceptions, maybe.

let's say neither person wants to be the primary custodian of the kids I'd hate to live in your world. If neither parent wants custody of the kids, why would the couple even have children? Logically, there must be at least one parent that wants children, most often both parents do or they wouldn't have them in the first place. Since reason shows that parents want to parent their children, and women are vastly more privileged in custody battles, its a cut and dry case of sexism against men. Neith…

Do this. It would cause quite a number of people to realize just how twisted our culture has gotten.

That this sort of thing is reported on as "news" is absurd. Its a situation of how teams are spending their budget... which is a social issue because why? Let people spend their money how they want to. Normally I'm all for calling out sexism, but that's not what is going on here. /facepalm.

Not only does kissing your daughter goodnight make you a pedophile, but it is sexualizing her and making her into a "tart." But we don't slut-shame... /s

But there are many examples of people calling themselves feminists that do just that. Plenty of examples across the sr.

There are tools and fools in both genders; no reason to feel disappointed in having one set of body bits or another. One thing that infuriates me is when men post "I'm ashamed to be a man" responses to something a toolish guy did. Every person is just that - an individual person. Be sad that she is so out of touch; don't be sad to be a woman. :)

I don't know about you, but I was not brought up being taught how to be connected to my emotions, and am only just getting back in touch with them after years of being cut off. I'd suggest cutting her some slack rather than getting bogged down in the word choice between "can be" and "are socially acceptably allowed to be." I'd say "can be" just because its less to type out and conveys the same idea. I agree that she isn't saying its a problem, but she doesn't say its well & good either.

The way I read her comment, she is pointing out differences in the gender roles that men and women currently fill. I didn't see anything that placed value one way or another - no "this is a good/bad thing". I think that, on average, and with the disclaimers she has at the start of her post, that she's right on the mark about how those gender roles play out. Its unfortunate that they are present, but she disagrees with the typical feminazi mindset.

I'm a member of /r/noFap, but I certainly don't think there's a gendered problem with people using pornography. If it doesn't make anyone involved hurt, what's the problem? Its not like these "actresses" don't know what they're getting into.

That's an interesting stance.... On one hand you have many innocent people already in prison who might get out if their false accusers care about them enough to get them out. On the other hand you have future false accusation victims out there that shouldn't have to go through that turmoil and social humiliation. Giving false accusers immunity means that MORE people will falsely accuse others and put them in jail, and only then will they maybe admit to the accusation being false. Prosecuting fal…

I think its really important to point out how many times comedians have made light of men getting raped (almost any prison ever) and no one stands up and challenges it. Because people in the US have freedom of speech. I was also pissed about the "nappy headed ho's" fiasco. Some people are terrible at recognizing OTHER people's rights... including many feminists.

If a kind redditor more skilled than I can provide an email address to anyone involved in the Olympic Committee or in any part of this decision, please do so. I would like to write them a strongly worded letter (still with complete polite professionalism) about their negligence in half of the support system that these athletes have.

It makes sense to me at least! And it does suck. Our conflicting opinions are largely about there not being a perfect answer to the issue, but trying to get as fair as possible. As you say, the responsibility of prevention or the blame (from society) is almost entirely on women. If there were more effective means of contraception for men, I expect they would be more equitable in this regard. Currently the only options men have are condoms (which women also have) and surgical vasectomy. (I'm sure…

You're using the 2nd wave definition of feminism. The vast majority of feminists you'll meet today are 3rd wave, and have vastly different motivations and ideas.

I think you make some good points here, but are discussing the issue from a different angle than most others. This issue quickly gets complicated because there is no way to make birthing options fair as you note. I don't think this discussion is focusing on who should have the right to choose to move forward with a pregnancy or not - I and the other MRA I've encountered fully agree that people should have control of their own bodies, including pregnancy. However, we're more focused on the issue …

Men have been socialized to be more stoic, with some societies regarding pain endurance as a sign of virility. Women have also been socialized to express things that are troubling them, such as pain. Women have been socialized to be help-seeking. Men have been socialized to be providers, not receiving help but giving it. Just a few more social biases that make an objective measure of gender-based pain tolerance difficult/impossible to obtain. Frankly, I'm not even sure what good it does for soci…

You have your acknowledges and stresses mixed up. Let me FTFY... It stresses a general bias that rape is seen with a female victim BUT acknowledges it can happen to men too.

She didn't come forward about it because she just wanted to see the woman win and the man lose. It also shows that police operate on a presumption of guilt.
