I think a large reason why the middle east is behind in stem is because of religion. yeah it really does have a lot to do with the economy - which is why countries like Romania produce so many because their wages are so low. Completely agree. I'm a big believer in the FIRE movement. What you say about being passed over for diversity hires is true.
