My ex was the master of this. Whenever I got all dressed up to go to an event or date and thought I was looking fine, he’d look at me and say, are you sure you want to wear that? He never said he found me sexy or that he desired me or was attracted to me. He said he liked confident women but undermined mine at every opportunity.

Judge me all you want but I don’t see it this way. I was married to an abuser who neglected me and made things so toxic. It led to me being in a low enough place where I was extremely vulnerable to even the tiniest bit of positive attention from a man. My ex couldn’t even admit that he wanted me, and perhaps he didn’t, but he was so controlling that I strongly think it was about being withholding and controlling. We were married with kids and he also leaned on me heavily for emotional support wh…

Very true and good advice. The last guy I dated did every thing right! But the last time we were together, we were making out and he kept trying to feel me up. I moved his hand and then told him no. He backed off and was like, ok just tell me when you’re ready. Things were good til I was about to leave, then he just playfully grabbed my shirt and flipped it up to see what was underneath. Right after we had talked about it. I felt so disrespected. He is blocked and I have t seen or spoken to him …

So I have never spoken to her or had any interaction with her. I’m asking if limiting her presence in my home and at Christmas time is unreasonable. In my mind I am being civil but treating her like the stranger she is. Also I feel I should add that I’ve never retaliated after learning that she was there nor discouraged the kids from liking her. My ex has the opinion that by limiting contact I’m being unspeakably rude to her and I think he’s way off but I wondering if I should let her into my da…

I can sympathize. I am hurting so much right now. I have two elementary aged children and stuck in a never ending divorce with someone who lives out of state. I am stuck in a small town living with my parents and I don’t know anyone in this town and there aren’t many groups I can join, or people who like what I like. Dating is a nightmare. Social life is nonexistent. I am so lonely and my brain is eating itself alive. I desperately want to move out and get back to the city but I can’t afford to …

Once me and my STBX husband flew to visit some family while I was pregnant with our first child. At the hotel, he could only find one of the flip flops he had packed, and he was adamant that someone STOLE the other one from him at the airport. I tried explaining to him that that made no sense and we could just buy another pair, and he flew into a rage, cursing and aggressively going through the room trying to find his missing flip flop. I took it upon myself to search his suitcase, and within mo…

I have a similar story. My STBX husband is in the Army, and we married just before he joined. When soldiers get promoted, there is a short little ceremony, and if they are married, usually it is the wife who gets to pin the new rank insignia on the soldier. Just as an acknowledgment of her dedication, sacrifice, and support as the dependent spouse. I had just given birth to our first child and he told me he wanted his buddy to pin him. He never even considered me. I was very hurt! He ended up le…

My ex would drive dangerously when he was mad about something unrelated to the road. Usually if he was mad at me or the kids, he’d jerk us around in the car. It was terrifying.

My instinct is that a lot of men do this because they feel entitled to it and they are banking on your shyness/meekness/idealized feminine traits not to hold them accountable for it. I think it would be amazing if you did hold them accountable! If you managed to solidly embarrass them then afterwards they might not be so flagrant towards other women. If I were in your shoes, I might say something as simple as “you are making me feel uncomfortable.” Assertively. Not in a meek, please leave me alo…

It’s so mean-spirited. Like he’s about to retire with the kids out of the house but he can’t let her retire too. No, she has to basically start from the beginning to earn his respect. Not her fault he doesn’t respect work in the home.

My opinion: most of the time, yes, it’s not a good sign. But I know a few HVM in good relationships who game online with their friends from time to time. It hardly takes priority and isn’t a regular occurrence, so I understand the desire to hang out with your buddies as part of a balanced lifestyle.

I just want to add my perspective as a soon-to-be divorced ex-wife. When it was clear that my ex and I were through, I was so hurt. I felt so rejected. Online dating was an effective distraction and validating because it made me feel wanted. The first guy I had a date with, was decent to me and I got all those special feelings ... I got serious with him very quickly and saw him exclusively for about 6 months. I ended up spending a few weeks with him at his home, during the pandemic last year. I …

This sounds like my STBXH. Any time he spent money on something I desired, like a math curriculum to homeschool our kindergartner during COVID, and we’d have an argument where I’d reject reconciliation, he’d demand that I pay him back. Super immature.

We’re in Austin and I’m also appreciating my sisters boyfriend as an HVM. Me and my kids are staying with them in his little apartment because they still have power and WiFi. He cooks for us, cleans everything, waits on my sister (and me and my kids) hand and foot, anything needed from outside he volunteers to get it. Basically not only does he let us all stay it’s him in his tiny space he makes sure everyone is happy and has everything they need. It’s so nice to see that this does exist.

So I have a question, related to my last cringey date. My date had a bit too much to drink in our first date. Like things started out really well but then he drank too much and got horny. Like we had just met and he kept trying to put his arm around me, leaning on my shoulder, stuff like that. Eventually he asked if I wanted to go make out and I said “I feel like I should get to know you better first.” Then he admitted that he drank too much and needed to go home.
