It has nothing to do with "hipster" or only liking obscure bands. I love the major traditional metal bands (priest, maiden, sabbath) as well as other quite popular bands like Enslaved and Behemoth. It has to do with taste. A lot of "mainstream" bands, are just nowhere near as good as others. They sound overproduced or have gimmics. The reason they are popular is because their music appeals to the lowest common denom, IMO something is sacrificed in that process.
