because I had low self esteem at the time and just dropped out of college. The thing is I didnt really have to work their because I had family willing to support me but i felt kinda useless not doing anything. This is how that job helped you. Perhaps a good rule is pay off in full every month. If not, no new charges until it is paid off. Hopefully that will give enough flexibility when needed.
