If you know nothing about guns, I'd suggest you take a one day or half day class on safety. Safety is paramount.

Then go to a range. Most have guns you can rent and try out. If you're concerned about handling one properly, start with a .22 pistol which doesn't kick. Once you get comfortable, you can try some others.

Then take a concealed carry class and get your license. Also go to a few gun shows and learn about different types of guns, holsters, etc. Gun show people and crowds are some of the nicest, most polite folks you'll ever meet. You can ask them pretty much anything.

Find your local former military redneck(not white trash). He'll teach you far more about firearms than any class will.

Check gun ranges near you for a weapons familiarity class. It should include firearm basics and a chance to use several weapons to find what's right for you.

don't buy a firearm until you know what you want / need, and why.

they're tools and have pros/cons depending on your context.

I think I'll take this advice. I've never so much as touched a gun, but I want to be prepared to hunt deer if I need to eat.

I didn't buy my first gun defense. I shoot clay pidgeons. And a shotgun is a good weapon. I learned gun safely in the boy scouts.

Safety. My first thought is YouTube. I do hope there's one; I see in the news it's needed.

I bought one online, had it shipped to a local ffl, and picked it up. Just be sure to give them a heads up first. The firearms community is very judgmental.

Finding a reputable shooting range in your area is a great first step. Ask about taking some lessons from an NRA certified instructor. Relevant topics will include weapons safety, weapons handling and marksmanship fundamentals.

Its a slow road at first; not unlike learning to drive. Once you learn how to handle a firearm safely and apply marksmanship fundamentals, you can work to become more comfortable and accurate.

Self defense related topics are more advanced. Being able to place your weapon into operation quickly and safely is the next step. Then you work towards being able to hit a target quickly and accurately. Then, engaging multiple targets under a time standard is a great skill to learn. IDPA matches are a great way to add stress to your training, in a safe and structured environment.
