Christianity is a woman’s religion, invented by women and womanish men for themselves. The Church’s one foundation is not Christ, as is commonly said, it is woman; and calling the Madonna the Queen of Heaven is only a poetical way of acknowledging that women are the main support of the priests.” – Samuel Butler
I found this quote the other day. The fact that an English writer wrote this more than a hundred years ago, tells me that this has been a problem for a long time, and isn’t the recent, i.e. within the last 50 years, situation that has been undermining the church.
I do not discount the importance of Christianity in the rise of Western Civilization, far from it, I find those historians that blame the fall of Rome on the rise of Christianity as laughably biased and willfully ignorant.
I do not think Western Civilization would have reached the pinnacles it has without Christianity and what it represents.
That being said, I am reminded once of a description of cancer being normal cells that at some point go wrong. The ingredients for a cancer is already present in the body decades before the cancer starts.
The things that make a civilization great are also the seeds of its own destruction.
The idea of a “worthy woman” someone worth fighting for, protecting and rescuing is in many ways a very western idea. It is an idea that provided stability, it is an idea that gave most men investment in society, that each man could have a worthy woman and heirs was a good thing for society.
It unfortunately has metastasized into the female supremacy movement.
There are some that believe a New Christianity or a rebirth of Christianity will occur out of the coming dark age. Indeed, Islam had a moment of ascension previously and appears to be at the cusp of another moment where it will dominate, so things do rise and fall.
I am reminded also of Ecclesiastes. Specifically Chapter 3:1-8. It is quoted often, the “For everything there is a season” part of the bible. There is a season for everything, for men, for nations, for religions, and whether this is just a winter for Christianity or the final winter for the faith, to which there is no spring, I am not sage enough to know.
A person of faith will say that Christianity will survive, but a human life span is not long enough to know the answer.
All things end on this Earth, there is nothing that is permanent.
The very sentiment of Ecclesiastes.
