I’ve heard a lot of defenses of illegal immigration, but last Thursday afternoon was the first time I heard it defended on the basis of the alleged propensity of American men to sexually assault undocumented immigrants. Although there is absolutely zero evidence that there is an epidemic of American men raping and molesting illegal immigrants, a local radio personality named Sable Verity, who offers opinion on KBCS, a Bellevue, Washington public radio station, has raised the specter of sexual assault to condemn Arizona’s new anti-illegal immigration law.
Most alarming is the lack of a provision that would protect undocumented residents should they report a crime. If a woman who is in this country illegally is raped, the last place she’ll be going is to the police. If a child who is a US citizen is molested, and her parents are not legal citizens, it’s unlikely they will seek medical attention, let alone justice for the wrong committed. What happens to that rapist? What happens to that child molester? Will they feel they have license to get away with it again?
I suppose it is simply a symptom of the times — if you want to make a political point, you start writing or talking about rape. Although it appears from news reports and court cases I’ve seen that illegal immigrants are more likely to rape American citizens than American citizens are to sexually abuse illegals, we are apparently supposed to believe that in order to prevent rampant sexual assault Americans must tolerate illegal immigration.
I don’t know where Ms. Verity came up with this idea. Perhaps it is a feminist meme. Sable lives in Seattle — my very left-wing hometown. Sexual assault happens here like anywhere else, but I can’t think of a specific instance where an American citizen used undocumented status to rape women. Not one. It may have happened in some massage parlor/brothel run by Chinese snakeheads (human smugglers) or Mexican coyotes, but it just doesn’t seem to be a widespread problem, and wouldn’t there be less overall abuse of illegals if there weren’t so many of them? This is simply another example of women’s issues being raised to defend governmental neglect or malfeasance, in this case the refusal of those in power to regulate immigration.
