Much like the difference in death in war and death in peace.

Men are expected and even in some cases obligated to die.

Have you ever noticed how the mass media hates the word "men"? If women or children suffer, you hear about it. If men suffer, gender neutral descriptors are used, if they're mentioned at all.

I'm not sure this is a good example. The girls were taken because they were girls. They were targeted because the radical Islamist group doesn't believe in women being educated, and they were abducted to be sold because they were female. The fact that they are girls is relevant to their fates, and thus to the story/article. The miners weren't specifically targeted because they were male.

There's good points to be made about why men work the most dangerous jobs and account for most of the workplace deaths, but I don't think CNN was being sexist by not pointing out that they were male in their headline.
