Yet another instance of Cathy Young being the voice of reason. Bravo.

And she's right: if you want to look at the most heinous examples of genuine oppression of women, you need to look no further than fundamentalist Islam (which is heavily institutionalized in the Islamic world and backed with Saudi oil money). Indeed, before the A-Plussers came in, the atheist movement were amongst the foremost critics of Fundie-Islam's oppression of women... but then Becky Watson throws a temper-tantrum and claims that instead of women having their clitorises excised, we need to discuss real oppressions like being asked to go out for coffee whilst in an elevator (and besides, we can't criticize the Islamic world... that would be racist and colonialist!).

Compare the trivial "misogyny" Becky deals with to the heinous abuse endured by women raised in the Islamic world, such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali (who still has to live under armed guard because of the danger of being assassinated). AHA spoke out against true misogyny and actual institutionalized oppression of women. She set up a foundation to defend the rights of women and girls in Islamic communities.

But of course, AHA is a classical liberal which means she has the 'wrong' politics and thus she gets ignored by the feminist movement. Typical.

Still, the West isn't perfect but frankly about 90% of the things feminists complain about are First World Problems, quite literally. And because of their politically correct dogma, they refuse to look at genuine, substantial, systemtic, institutionalized problems which oppress hundreds of millions of the world's women.

Claiming that the horrors endured by women born in fundamentalist Islamic communities are equivalent to (and thus no worse than) those gender-based burdens borne by educated white western women is a disgrace.

Women in the western world just don't understand how well they have it.

They try to relate their problems to that of cultures that obviously treat women as sub-human.

They keep trying to force the idea that they have the same problems as women in clearly misogynistic societies and countries.

Those women, in places like the Middle East, are the ones that need help.

Feminists in the western world would rather complain about men saying "bad things" to them than raise awareness about the horrible crimes done to women outside western society.

It's no longer the 50's in Western Society.

He's a politician. He knows exactly how the public would respond to certain statements. He has to cater to the massive persecution complex of feminists in the U.S. If he can turn them away from the beyond trivial issues they're focusing on here, it would be a huge plus to turn all of that idle political clout towards something even remotely useful. He may have been a worthless president, but he is a very smart man.

This is not about geographical locations. Muslims living in western lands also enforce much stricter rules on females. There are much higher rates of domestic violence and practices like female circumcision continue.

I'm amazed that race is never brought up in these types of discussions. Feminists dont want to point out these problems NOT because they are so tolerant of religions, NOT because they would rather focus on problems at home, it is simply because Muslims are not white (for the most part)

They believe the most oppressive demographic in the world is white males. Yes they are anti-man. That is half the picture. They are also anti-white.
