I liked that quite alot. It's always refreshing to see fathers (and men in generally) depicted well. My father is truly my family's unsung hero. My mother is heaped with praise (which she deserves) but my dad is often overlooked. Agree with you about the tear to the eye thing.

I'm going home in two weeks for the first time in a year and a half. I've never had the closest relationship with my dad, but being at university all this time has made me realize just how much he means to me. Hearing the details about his filthy job he's had for 25 years just to support the family has made me respect him infinitely more even if he wasn't always around or took much interest in my school or relationships growing up. He was never front and center with homework, girls, or puberty. Even when I was a really young kid and a little shit to deal with, he was always embarassed in public and would do nothing but ignore the problem and scold me at home. He ignored a lot of my problems and the sibling hatred was magnified by his inability to see her for what she is. But he was always in the shadows. Standing up for me behind my back, making sure I had the stuff I wanted and needed by working buttloads of overtime for years. He was my silent guardian I never knew I had and didn't deserve. I had to learn how to be a man on my own and he was never a role model, but damnit he's still my dad and thinking about his job is literally killing him and telling me he's come to terms with his mortality at 53...It takes a lot for me to cry, but recently, thinking about him is the only thing that tears me up...even now typing this. The first thing I'm going to do when I see him is hug him...Damnit dad. I love you.
