Read a lot of feminist thought during my undergrad so I became intimately familiar with the idea of the "other/particular" versus "the universal". it comes up a lot in race studies, too. It's basically the ability for the dominant culture to claim the "norm" as their own ground, thus rendering their particularity 'invisible'. They become the "default". Now, in some cases, this works out well, like in the case of race where it's a long, stratified hierarchy of shit rolling down-hill. But this doesn't work out too well where gender's concerned: gender is a binary, plus there's biology involved. Not to mention that gender relationships were the linchpin for a society's success not too long ago (and in areas in the third world, it still is). Gender is nothing like 'race'. So it makes sense that the same concept would operate completely differently, given the differing contexts.

Violence against males is essentially invisible to us, because absorption/dispensing of violence (on behalf of the self, society, women, etc) is a fundamental male evolutionary role.

If men (or people in general) were not inured to violence against men, it would have been too psychologically traumatizing to all members of society to watch/expect men to fill the role of dispensing violence against other men, and absorbing other men's violence to protect women, children, society.

Violence against women feels deeply wrong to us, because that value judgment is wired into us. Violence against men does not feel wrong in the same way, because we have a different value judgment about it.

This is why the three women and two children are notable enough to be remarked on, while the 25 men are essentially ignored. They're merely filling a role that feels natural to us.
