I don't mind programs and initiatives that encourage girls to become more scientists through things like girl-specific events and such, as the reason it's a male-dominated field is distinctly because of cultural influences (screw you Obama and your "scientists are sexist" Title IX plans), and having things like events specifically for girls is an effective way of counter-balancing that. And it's not giving anyone a leg up in the first place, it's just trying to invigorate people's interests.

...which is why it is not okay to simply give women more money to be scientists! That's not encouraging at all, that's just plain-and-simple "female scientists are more important" discrimination.

Second link: Essentially an external scholarship to Montreal Polytechnic for any women with a good transcript, who are enrolled in college. They have to make a presentation, as I understand it, and will be scored on their use of sources, quality of presentation, and the usage/persuasive ability of their presentation.

Also, while I'm here: is it true that similar, but more extreme, programs exist for First Nations people in Canada too? I heard that before when I was in Canada, quite a few years ago, that there was something like "free education" for them, but I really can't remember what it was about anymore.
