The French are a bit mixed up on gender: penis (la bite) is feminine, vagina (le vagin) is masculine. These are words that date back hundreds of years. The modern words for electrical plug and socket are the same (feminine: la prise) so perhaps the language is reflecting a levelling with respect to gender issues. Or not.
