Women demanded special privileges and protections then, just as they do today. Very few women have died in industrial, military, or scientific accidents. They did not die, because they took no risks. As a consequence, very few women were qualified to undertake high risk endeavours.

Ride was under-qualified compared to hundreds of longer serving, harder working, and more committed male candidates. She was flow into space like a tourist, because of her protected gender.

When women want to spill their sweat, their tears, and their blood for others, they will know what it means to actually earn what they have.
