This person is not me, despite the similarities in names. Apparently men helping men is too hateful for some asshole like this.

Gay men are men, too. It is part of men's rights. If you are just a conservative/traditionalist, or are anti-gay, so be it. But just because you are bigoted, doesn't mean others have to be. When I get a chance to read this subreddit, there is very little about gay issues. Clearly posting the occasional one is not excessive.

Read the comments on the article. Many scientists have backed up my opinion. Go to www.arXiv.org or www.inspirehep.com and you can search for the names of the people responding to see that they are, in fact, prominent scientists.

Why do I think this is a men's rights issue? Women get a lot of attention in dance pairs/groups due to their flexibility. But men get relegated to the background muscle, and are rarely the focus. This is also in part because of sex appeal for the female, who dress skimpily. Male-male dancing can become more mainstream, where as female-female and male-female dancing has been more accepted in the past. In addition, this is pushing the right for straight men to associate with gay men without being …

As a scientist who submits papers to the arXiv regularly, I can say with certainty that most of the fields who put papers on the arXiv put authors names in alphabetical order in order to not give any one author preference over another. This study fails to note that, and thus undermines their conclusions.

You appear to want to create a new ideology to rival feminism, rather than let individuals have their own ideology and then collectively work together towards common goals (such as men's rights, women's rights, etc). I don't see your solution as being any better than feminism. It is, in fact, susceptible to the exact same problems of feminism - enforcing group-think. Democracy is about bringing people with separate ideas together to work on solutions to common problems. Bringing people together …

A person can be a women's rights activist, a men's rights activist, a civil rights activist, a gay rights activist, etc. without being in conflict at all.

I don't think the false dichotomy is a product of feminism. Look at what happened recently with Dawkins - it is the same logical misstep that people took to twist his statements. It is people making these stupid assertions, not the ideology itself. But yes, "if you don't agree with me about one thing I hold dear, then you must be dichotomatically opposed to everything I hold dear" is far too common.

I was not so specific. It was a general statement. I don't care what an individual believes - you are free to believe whatever you want. But it is ridiculous to assert that a person who opposes feminism must necessarily oppose women's right to vote, for example.

This is actually a very important study that should be followed up with more research. In essence: a group who harms others is more likely to claim to be victims themselves in order to excuse their behaviour towards others. It is also why groups like Feminism and Men's Rights attract people who are aggressive and bullyish. There are definitely members of feminism and the men's rights movement who are not bullies, who are not aggressive and domineering, but it would be folly to deny that bullies …

A female acquaintance of mine, whose relationship will remain undefined in this instance, is both a rape victim and agrees (to an extent) with Elam on that second link. Her argument is that it is not fair and respectful of women to use sexuality to lead men on. She doesn't believe that anyone deserves to be raped, and it is still a crime, but she does believe that there is a certain fair etiquette that a person should use. Similarly, going by stereotypes, she feels that a guy who flaunts his mon…

First, get the story straight before asking the question. Patriarchy didn't have an overarching "purpose". It is simply a social structure that determines degrees of authority based on gender. The assertion feminists make is that women are oppressed under a patriarchal social structure. That does not mean you can apply personification to the social structure and claim that it is acting overtly upon women. They use a classification of oppression to describe a group of people who do not have the s…

So... you were wrong about programmer salaries. Good to see you accept that. And then your second article suggests the very thing that people on this subreddit have been saying for a long time - that women are choosing jobs with a greater work-life balance, among other things. That is not mainly social conditioning. The study cannot measure that. That is an application of personal bias to the results. But, that being said, people on this subreddit do not deny that there are differences in income…

I have plenty of research that disagrees with yours. But you are the one making the claim, therefore you are the one upon whom the responsibility of supporting that claim is laid. "I am on a mobile" isn't much of a counter argument. It is really quite easy to do research on mobile - harder than a regular computer, but not difficult in the grand scheme of things. You could also follow it up at a later time.

I am going to ignore the text of your comment because it just screams of troll. But to answer the submission title: yes, but not in the way that is spouted in the media. The gender pay gap has to do with gender because people of different genders, on average, make different choices. These choices can be influenced by biology, by socialization, and potentially by non-overt discrimination (such as suggested by the study that tested male vs female names). This is a very different statement than say…

In an ideal world, you might be right. Judging based on a person's observable behaviour might work in theory, but I don't think it is practical. The classic "She seemed alright to me" argument would be sufficient counter argument to "You raped her" in a court that uses a 99% certainty standard. It focuses on one person's ability to determine state of mind from behaviour, rather than on the actual state of mind - an even more "muddy" issue. These issues are really quite hard to resolve to everyon…

You are saying that it is embarrassing that there exist people in the world that don't understand the laws and the philosophy behind them? I would venture to guess that the philosophy behind the law goes something like this: A person who is drunk is responsible for their own actions, but not responsible for actions done to them/taken against them. Whenever an activity involves more than one person, and one of them is inebriated, the activity changes dynamic. If both are taking actions against a third party, then the inebriated party is still responsible. If they are taking action involving only each other, and only one party is ine…

The argument of egalitarianism is not that men and women are biologically equal, or that biology doesn't play an effect. It is rather that biology is not the only factor, and that men and women each have the potential to similarly achieve in different aspects of life. I wouldn't call them sickos. I would say that people are a little short sighted, and don't see past their own issues. That is one of the big problems with feminism - feminists have a difficult time seeing past their own issues, empathizing with others. That is why feminism doesn't actually address men's issues. None of the feminists experience them, and just write them off as being part of the patriarchy, and therefore resolvable when feminism wins its war against the patriarchy.

I don't see anything over in AskReddit... Anyways... rape is an act done to another person. A woman cannot rape you by penetrating herself, according to the common definition of rape. Many people here disagree with that definition, and we use the term "forced envelopment of the penis" to refer to such situations. Many people here will assert that such events should be included in rape, and the statistics show that when they are, in the same surveys that show high rates of rape of women, then you…

Men can't be raped in their view because "rape" is defined as being penetrative. So unless someone penetrates the man (anally or orally), then they can't be raped. They can be sexually assaulted, but not raped. It is an issue of definition - they define rape as being penetrative, and the result is a drastic gendered issue. The gendered nature of the problem is neither surprising nor concerning if the definition is so restrictive as to create that gender imbalance.

This is a situation that many women claim to experience - they feel that they had a sexual encounter that they said "no" to, but found they ended up enjoying it. Just because the father has some custody rights, doesn't mean he is going to actually enforce those rights (or, as has often been discussed here, nor can he). Right. And if it is for discriminatory reasons, then it should be recognized and fixed. But this, in and of itself, does not indicate that. Just like the wage gap doesn't.

This is the way taxes work. Why is this a big deal? Poor people pay a smaller amount into social security but withdraw a larger percentage of the benefits. Taxes are a redistribution of wealth. This is no more of an argument than the wage gap is.

I was less than happy with the video, though I watched the whole thing. His counter argument seems to centre around the fact that gender doesn't matter in video gaming, which doesn't actually address the issues that Anita brings up in her videos. Anita often talks about the portrayal of women in video games, and less about the treatment of women in multiplayer games. There are plenty of counter arguments to Anita, but the ones given I found very ineffective at addressing Anita's issues.

Within the feminist ideology, when something doesn't work it simply means that the patriarchy is too strong - it does not mean that the ideological interpretations of the world are ineffective at producing results. When "no means no" campaigns failed to create the change they were intended to do, the only possible result allowed by the ideology is that it didn't go far enough. Thus, they abandoned the idea of denying consent being the barrier between sex and rape, and adopted the idea that the d…

Let's deconstruct the stupidity. Calling domestic violence a "woman's issue" means that guys can go "I am a guy and therefore this doesn't apply to me." This is an assertion. Without stating "x group found this in a study", it is just simply an opinion. It can be disregarded as easily as it can be asserted. He is calling all men sexist, and he isn't providing any proof. I am not sure this is a win for men's rights. If the fundamental legal rights are actually enforced, it might be. If not, then it is no change. Additionally, it says "nonbirthing spouse", instead of "biological parent". While there are issues for "biological parent" arising for gay couples, and I can sympathize with the issues of that wording, the current wording still allows for duped spouses with unfaithful partners to be stuck with the "ensured support from that parent".

Voluntary philanthrophy goes far beyond Christian groups. Look at private donations to non-Christian charities, NGO's etc. There is a huge amount of voluntary philanthropy in the US. Not nearly sufficient to cover the social system that the US needs to provide for the poor/disabled. Interesting how you equate "collective" and "coercive." I find that quite telling. Actually, Rand and most libertarians have the view that social support systems should be supported through voluntary philanthropy. Any time something like this gets pointed out, feminists just turn around and say "because patriarchy", and blame the whole thing on the patriarchy. They claim that it is the patriarchy that says that men are sexual fiends. When pointed to contradictory evidence, they just say "well, that is just one small group/thing, it doesn't count for the rest. It is still patriarchy." But it isn't about aggressiveness vs politeness. You may characterize it as aggressive activism, but it doesn't define aggressive activism, and therefore it can't be used interchangeably. Why do you rephrase this as an issue of "polite activism"? I am not advocating for polite activism. I am saying that we should behave and express the ideals that we want our political opponents to. Should we name and shame people who take <X> action(s)? We should choose whether we do that by whether we wish our opponents to do the same. And we should note that <X> action isn't what is being decided, it is naming and shaming. Each group will insert their own <X>, and it is the naming and shaming …

The best way to think about it is like a contract. In the event of a breach of contract, there are generally penalties, right? However, family law has the penalties set up against whomever makes the most money (is the primary provider). Behaviour doesn't seem to have much effect on what happens, especially with no-fault divorce. It is just a penalty to whomever earns more for breach of contract by whomever decides to divorce.

But for the moderators to get involved in actual fund raising would be opening themselves up to doxxing and to legal issues should the money be misused. I don't think that even you get your point. Some feminists want to close women's jails entirely. Right, so not all feminists are working on men's issues. Some are working against them. Some disregard them. Some support them. Some want to fix them in ways that many men don't want them to be fixed. You cannot claim that feminists are working on men's issues if they don't act collectively.

the notion that there can be no areas at which one gender is more adept is utterly absurd. I would suggest changing your argument to "at which one gender is more interested". The argument you make should be scientifically provable. The argument I suggest is just statistics and societal trends.

The entire argument rests on the principle of NAFALT - not all feminists are like that. The problem with making such an argument is that NAFALT! Not all feminists are like this either! You cannot claim feminism is working on these issues if you hing your entire argument on how not all feminists disregard male issues. You are no more speaking for feminists than those who disregard male issues are, or than those who are anti-male. As for the "because patriarchy" arguments, I think those have been …

You are strawmanning the argument. MRAs do support gay men. But /r/MensRights is not the MRM, it is just a subreddit. And, to keep things organized, sometimes topics need to be put in other subreddits. It isn't because the topic isn't supported, it is because it is an organizational principle.

You must be a male to be a father, simply by definition of the word (though I would not be opposed to the word changing definition over time to allow for same sex female couples to have one person play a "father" role). Thus, father's rights are encompassed entirely within men's rights. Not so with gay rights.

Gay rights and men's rights intersect when it has to do with male gayness, as opposed to simply gayness in general. Topics of gay rights and intersect with men's rights include: Acceptance of female-female relationships with repulsion of male-male relationships. Issues with transgenderism, where they are viewed as bad for having male genitals or being formerly male. Issues with cross dressing where the cross dresser is seen in a poor light due to either their male sex or their male dress.

That is a point you haven't actually made until now. Am I shaming him? No, not really. Shame is an internal emotion. If he is comfortable in his actions, then he should feel no shame. I tried to argue that there is a better way of behaving than the one that the OP chose, but I did not suggest that he should leave himself open to more abuse. Here is the quote, since you are enjoying paraphrasing and manipulating the intent of my statements: you could have shown that you were a bigger person by at least breaking up with her normally. This is a pretty easily debunked argument. A word's origin does not necessarily declare the word's common meaning. For example, "awful" originated as "worthy of respect/fear", and now it means "terrible". A manhole cover is not sexist against females, nor is the hole masculine. It refers to sewer entrance points that were large enough for humans (men, at the time) to go down into. Just because it continues to be used does not indicate anything to do with the gender. Feminism, as a word, has a hi…

Well, first off you can note that non-verbal consent is very common practice by both genders. What constitutes non-verbal consent is not clearly defined (definable) in the law, and therefore leads to these kinds of problems. If a person gives consent, they are not a victim but rather a participant in the sexual act. Redefining the debate to presume a status of victimhood is post hoc ergo proctor hoc, I believe. They are presumed a victim and therefore found a victim. But, under the proper null p…

I think the issue about libertarianism is that the aspects of libertarianism that match with the common ideals in the MRM are not unique to libertarianism, no matter how central they are. When taken altogether, they describe a pattern of disrespectful behaviour towards women, which would be indicative of a sexist society IFF the pattern was so widespread that it described a majority of the populace. But, taken as single instances, without any ability to judge the society as a whole, it does not indicate sexism. I think that is why many women find such behaviours sexist, and eventually come to treat the individual behaviours as sexism.

Well, considering Norway just defunded their gender program for being non-scientific, it does look attractive. Uh, they all have quite the significant criminal undergrounds. Not sure they are good examples. Want to examine a country with a low crime rate? Examine Norway. One of the problems with crime statistics is the difference between "reported crime" and "crime". Some countries may report a low "reported crime" rate, even if there is an actual higher crime rate, due to systematic reasons.

Fear is not an effective means to prevent crime. There is a hell of a lot of fear in the act of many crimes, and that clearly doesn't prevent criminals from acting in such a way. This is getting ridiculous. Parents love children and show that affection in non-sexual ways. That is no pedophilia, that is parenting. It is important in the process of raising a child. Here is another way to think about it... What if the question was worded in such a way that the responders thought it was explicit, verbal consent? The women, not being inundated with all the rape propaganda, are going to consider whether explicit verbal consent was given. Non-verbal consent will be sufficient for them to have sex, but they would feel comfortable saying that they didn't get explicit verbal consent. The men, on the other hand, being inundated with rape propaganda, are going to fe…

golf clap If someone wants to post a series of signs that someone is abusive, I will be behind that. If you want to post something about undesirable qualities (some/many of which are indicators of abuse), then I am going to disagree that it has to do with rights.

But the things here are not necessarily abusive so much as undesirable. Ending a relationship because of one or two undesirable qualities would leave everyone single for most of their lives.

People can do whatever they want. I am saying that bashing feminism in a way that doesn't actually address its issues in a critical way (such as straw-manning feminism) is unproductive, and that trying to silence people and their ideas rather than convince them and others that their ideas are wrong is dangerous and anti-"rights".

The problem is twofold the way I see it. First, emulating feminism and the feminist movement's tactics is an ironic and tragic thing for the MRM to do. Straw man. No - provide support to single parent homes so that they can raise kids that are capable and productive. It is like abortion laws - abortion has been documented for thousands of years. Making it illegal didn't make it go away. But making it legal makes it safer for those who choose to go that route. When we support our fellow citizens, we enhance our society as a whole. That is the point of a society - the realization that working cooperatively benefits everyone.

In an ideal situation, I agree that such a situation is beneficial to all people involved. I think the purpose of the current system (I am not defending it, just describing) is to prevent the money-parent, as you call it, from leveraging their finances to sway the child towards living with them. A lot of people have that misconception without actually knowing the person's expenditures. It may be true, it may not, but it makes a person look foolish when they assert that they "know" something because they basically guess it, as you have done. We can't judge whether $60k/year is a lot until we know a lot more about that person's income. Do you believe that women's birth control is paid for by the government because it stops them from having children or because it protects from various other health problems? Neither. I think the original reason is the argument that it generally affects women much more significantly than men (causing cancers in the uterus I believe), and it can be eliminated by inoculating only half the population (because if half of the population is inoculated, then eventually the other half won't be able to catch it). I was not aware that the Nazi party or anyone within the Nazi organization was feminist. Nobody within the movement objects when we discuss human behavior by noting similarity to the behavior of other primates. I regularly reject such arguments and much of evo-psych for a very similar reason. A lot of the science com…

There is a difference between noting real examples of things and strengthening an argument by using analogy to real examples. From a philosophical perspective, an argument must stand on its own merits.

I think she gets away with it because she is an open lesbian - thus claims of her objectifying people are easily undermined. But she doesn't run the show (I am sure she has huge input, though), her producers do, and, in turn, her audience does.

Well, we will just have to continue to disagree on this matter. I still stand by my statement that a valid argument shouldn't need any analogy to real situations, and that any attempt to do so is an appeal to emotion by evoking the emotions of the real situation being analogized.
/r/MensRights20/02/13 10:17 PM

Yes, but all of those things can be said without invoking Naziism. They should be offensive enough to the senses without association with Naziism.

Feminism is involved in more than just women's rights issues. It is involved in politics, economics and ethics/law. There are flavours of feminism, just as there are flavours of conservatism/liberalism. So I can't adequately say what "feminism" stands for, since there may be some feminists that don't stand for it. But the central tennets are that "traditional" aspects of politics, economics and ethics/law exist to reinforce patriarchy, and therefore need to be eliminated and replaced. For exampl…

Feminism does not need to exist any more than conservatism does. These things don't need to exist, they simply do exist because people are adherents of the ideology. Stop conflating feminism with women's rights activism or egalitarianism.
/r/MensRights20/02/13 06:26 PM
1

Hey, you know I am a big fan, but I think we can do better than reductio ad naziism. I understand the point you are trying to make, but maybe it can be made without the analogy? Invoking naziism is essentially an appeal to emotion, since it associates naziism with whatever it is being analogized to.

Men's Rights Advocates/Activists are comparable to Women's Rights Advocates/Activists, not feminists. Feminism is an ideology that involves more than just advocating for certain rights. Discussing and criticising feminism is like discussing and criticising liberalism, conservatism, or whatever else.

You should never be ashamed of your gender. Other people's actions should not ever reflect poorly on the actions of others with similar genetic properties over which they have no control. There is a HUGE difference between holding all feminists accountable for the actions of other feminists - feminism is a choice made by each individual, and their support for the ideology gives power to those who continue to abuse it - and holding all women accountable for the actions of other women - which is r…

Yes, that material has already been debunked by Hoff Sommers and others. I think it is true that a significant amount (in terms of numbers, not percentages) of rapes go un-reported, as with any victimization, because people internalize their situation and feel responsible somehow, and potentially embarrassed at being victimized. But I don't have any data to back that up, it is just my own feeling.
/r/MensRights19/02/13 04:23 PM

I believe the statistic is collected by doing a survey of women and asking them (leading) questions about whether they have been raped in the last year, extrapolating to the rest of the population and then comparing with the number reported.

Are you really sure you identify as a feminist? Have you really, really looked into feminism beyond being told that it fights for equal rights? Do you understand what your fellow feminists believe and what they are fighting for? I don't know you, I don't know your history, but if you are disagreeing with things that feminists say/do, then perhaps you should call yourself a "women's rights activist/advocate" and not aspire to an ideology that you appear to disagree with.

Feminism is about so much more than just "equal rights" (if it ever was about equal rights). Feminists cannot work with men's activists rights because feminism isn't just simply about gender rights. It purports a wide variety of societal changes, many of which are acceptable to some men's rights activists and unacceptable to others. When feminists abandon all of these other aspects, there is no reason for these people not to work with men's rights activists - but at that point there is no point …

I won't claim that withholding sex is abuse, though it is manipulation. One has to make the cognitive leap towards understanding manipulation as abuse, since a LOT of activities that humans do might be considered manipulation and not all of it is fully conscious - sometimes people learn to do it reflexively.

This is a silly discussion to be having. An "equal" or egalitarian society should work to eliminate hindrances, restrictions and requirements on people that are based on gender and that arise from either the socialization of gender or that arise from external influences (past social systems, social systems in other countries, etc). But a society doesn't have to be egalitarian - in fact, I am not sure any of them are.

The link you cited makes this claim: "The rate at which mothers’ requests for sole custody were honored is 65% higher than the comparable rate for fathers’ requests." I really don't think you understand what he was saying. Let me try to explain. Pre-WWII, discourse was an activity participated in by intellectuals. After WWII, coincidentally not causally, with the rise of technology (technology frees up time, which people fill with other activities), more people started taking part in public discourse. This isn't even a men's rights issue. We don't have the "right to equal sized bathrooms". It all depends on the expected throughput. Men use the washroom much faster, generally, because we can use urinals. As long as there isn't ever a wait for either gender, it really doesn't matter.

This is a bad, bad idea.

The comment on social security is a little bothersome. Do people not understand how insurance works? Social security is like insurance. You may pay more or less than you get out of it, but when you average over all people it works. It needs this feature of "some people pay more than they get out of it" to compensate for the others that need more. If you don't like that, fine, but that is a political/economic statement, not one of rights. Fight against insurance, in that case.

That is a true statement. People will discuss circumcision until either side becomes forceful and asserts a desire to change the laws in their favour. Obviously that is going to make the opposite side more defensive. The strongest argument that anti-circumcisionists have is that the baby does not have a choice. They have a lot more issues to deal with during the actual pregnancy. Additionally, men likely need different resources than women, and likely different staff. Based on the allocation of funding, their male hours are adjusted. When men start complaining about lack of service at Planned Parenthood, that is when we should start supporting them. But until then, c…

This is silly. Feminism doesn't kill, obviously, any more than it is the guns, or patriarchy, or men in general. Ideas don't kill. People with ideas kill. And each person is comprised of a wide set of ideas that it is impossible to blame just one or one set.

I think few people are noticing that the wording in the article says "Woman accused of lying about rape" gets prison time. When a man is taken to court for rape, or anything else really, they are treated as if they actually did the crime. In this case, the person was convicted and they are still being treated as if they are simply accused.

Poking holes in a condom is taking an act against someone else. I can understand how that is wrong. If a woman does it, she is acting against herself - so long as she doesn't seek child support. When that happened, it became hypocritical.

Fantastic. You are what people call a misogynist. It isn't so much that you hate all women, but you do appear to treat women with a severity that suggests you have preconceived views based on their gender.

They claim that it isn't wrong when men do it. Depending on who you talk to, they are right about that. Additionally, people use the word "slut" to describe people whose behaviour they want to control, rather than merely as a descriptive term. We have the medical knowledge now to understand the dangers of sex with multiple/varied partners. As long as a person is safe about it, there is no need to label and shame the person.

Tolkien could write women, he just didn't write them as modern women are portrayed in the media. On top of that, Liv Tyler's Arwen had absolutely nothing to do with the books (and was a retarded addition to the movie). So that is not justification for your view of Tolkien's ability to write women.

If women are approaching dating as a way to find someone to fund their family-making-enterprises once they hit their 30s, then they really are going to be losing out to the women in their 20s who want to do the same thing but are younger, more energetic, more virile, and more able to offer the guy the benefits of a younger age. But if they approach relationships as finding a compatible friend to spend a long time with, then they should be just fine. But that means they need to start looking at m…

Bill Maher has had some things that would suggest he is supportive of the MRM. But really, he is just anti-bullshit. So he will be critical of both the negative aspects of the MRM (ie the members who are too extreme) as well as of feminism (ie the members who are too extreme). But I don't think that means he is going to find every feminist to be worthy of criticism, and he likely doesn't see how rejecting the friends in his life due to their ideologies to be a useful endeavour.

I think this highlights one of the differences between Feminism and, let's call it, Masculism. In Feminism, they recognize the problems of privilege and think that the solution is to give privileges to those they identify as being privilege-weak. In Masculism, we recognize the problems of privilege and think that the solution is to try to eliminate the sources of bias, only.
/r/MensRights18/12/12 10:08 PM

So to analyze her statements... Privilege is the effect of a person's biological status on how society treats that person. In her case, it was aesthetics that lead people to treat her differently than others. None of that is therefore under the control of the person receiving the benefits. And, so long as they don't specifically seek to abuse it, then really they are not morally or ethically required to do anything about it other than recognize it. I note that she never claimed to refuse any of …

/r/MensRights17/12/12 03:47 AM

The feminist ideal for women is being strong, independent, career oriented, competitive, aggressive, and even violent, as opposed to social, interdependent, family oriented, cooperative, accommodating, and pacifistic. I disagree. They want strength through interdependence, cooperative career orientation, non-aggressive of violence in general. This is based on lobby efforts of feminists (gender quotas, for example, and attempts to remove competition), and a reading of feminist philosophy.

Society is still, to a large extent, traditional. Men are still expected to be the primary providers, and women are still expected to be the primary care takers. But obviously that is changing. However, it isn't changing to the opposite, it is changing towards an equality - neither men nor women being expected to be providers, nor primary care takers. If we were to graph the trend, it wouldn't be two linear lines crossing. It would be two lines approaching an asymptote at the centre.
/r/MensRights16/12/12 07:59 PM

I understand people's view on this (in terms of conservatist views), but disagree with it. The societal benefits for socialized birth control outweigh the negatives, especially since the cost is rather low compared to other government expenditures. There is a difference between individual reasons, and overall effect. Each woman/man will have different reasons for agreeing with feminism, but that doesn't mean that feminism doesn't feed ego and remove responsibility. Both of these things (the ego feeding and absolution of responsibility) are attractive and work in the background, rather than being the surface reason. For example, let's say I am a student and my grades are low (and this is not a 1:1 example, so don't replace student with woma…

Feminism resonates so deeply with many women because it feeds ego. It tells them they are special, and their plight in life is not their fault. This kind of pandering is done to children, and it creates narcissism - look at the current generation. Someone on AskMen recently said to me that the reason that women and men end up having their arguments blow up is because women want men to at least accept and agree that their argument is legitimate, and to understand where they are coming from. Society likes norms. Society is built on norms. Society is a collection of people of similar ideals, tastes, etc. People naturally like living with the familiar, the known, because it is something they can understand and feel comfortable around. NAFALT and NAWALT arguments are regularly debunked here in terms of offering little to no content or refutation of the actual points being made. Look into feminist ethics and epistemology. If you still agree with it, then I think you and I are at an impasse. If you want to be a women's rights advocate, go for it. I think, as with anything, there needs to be some judgment used for these kinds of things. People with a high likelihood of re-offending - because, quite frankly, our system of incarceration and punishment does NOT rehabilitate our criminals - can be a danger to society. However, an 18 year old guy who has sex with his 16 year old girlfriend certainly doesn't deserve a lifetime of punishment.

Do you realize that a portion of feminists are transphobic? They think f->m are traitors, and m->f are wolves in sheep's clothing. Gay men's rights are still men's rights, and they do get posted here. However, the gay community has a good lead on addressing these issues and are the best people to talk to about such issues. I used to think I was a feminist until I really knew more about it. Warren Farrell says (my own interpretation) "we should look into the effects of incest independent of the cultural taboo to see if the cultural taboo is warranted." That is a very different statement from saying that incest is a good or positive thing, or that it should be legalized. And Manboobz says (my own interpretation) "Inc…

Asked to respond, I had but one question for these guys, a question about the title of the show. Actually, my question was about one word in the title of the show. I wanted to know about the word “my.” Why did the men think it was their job? Why wasn’t the title of the show “A black woman got a job” or “A black woman got the job”? The answer, I argued, was that these men felt entitled to the position, and that any effort to make the workplace more equal was perceived, by those men, as a loss. Th…

/r/MensRights26/11/12 04:30 AM

Yeah, I think we are in agreement. It is a very complex issue, certainly. If a large majority of women are feeling this way, then we need professionals (medical) to look into it and see if maybe either the procedures need to change or else the accountability of the doctors need to change. But if they come back and find otherwise, then we should accept that judgment (assuming it was impartially derived).

My experience talking with you is best fit by the term argument rape. You have argument raped me. That is valid because it fits my experience. Edit: Just because a person feels a certain way, doesn't mean that is a valid emotion or that they actually understand their emotion, or even that it is anyone else's responsibility to do anything about it. That is the feminist solution - if a person feels bad, others are responsible for fixing it. In psychological terms, that would be called codependence…
/r/MensRights24/11/12 08:29 PM

And now you are straw manning my statements. People make arguments because they believe it is a valid argument. But that doesn't mean it isn't manipulative, and it is our job to reject such arguments. People are inevitably selfish and will use whatever they can to get their way, without even thinking that is what they are doing.

Put yourself in the doctor's position. On a tight schedule with lots of patients, know what needs to be done but the mother may be uncooperative (not by choice, they are experiencing a lot at that point in time). Doctors aren't giving as much attention to their bedside manner because we aren't providing them with the resources they need (nurses, administrators, etc) because no one wants to pay taxes anymore. You want better care? Pay more taxes. Or, in the case of the US, change your medical sys…

/r/MensRights24/11/12 05:54 PM

If it is medical misconduct, then it should be handled as such. But if it is just that you don't like how the doctor performs the procedure, then I don't agree. They have jobs to do, that they are trained to do, that they are paid to do. That doesn't make it rape.
/r/MensRights24/11/12 05:05 PM

Agreed. It is a serious issue, I can imagine it does happen (I have no evidence since it is a new topic to me), but it is addressed under medical misconduct. Calling it rape is just a power grab from the power wielded by the term "rape".

Keep in mind that government statistics are biased in very specific ways - they quite often rely on police reports and reports from violence shelters. Our cultures are very similar.

Sure. I think there may be biological influences to interest and motivation. As far as capability goes, any research showing similarities in IQ and other measures of intelligence is enough to show that the genders are equally capable of things. There is a huge leap to go from "equally capable" to "there should be equal numbers", though.
/r/MensRights21/11/12 08:58 PM

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people in the far right that can't seem to understand the argument that men and women are both equally capable. It isn't a hard argument to understand, and it is backed up by a mountain of statistics and studies. This is not the same thing as saying that men and women are identical, nor is it saying that men and women are both capable of the same extremes (physical, mental, emotional).

The bad thing is the lack of choice, not the role specifically. Maybe there should be a women's rights movement independent of feminism? Most people here are egalitarian. But this is a place to discuss issues related to men. If you wish to have a place to discuss issues related to women, you could make r/WomensRights or something. Feminism is not "women's rights". Feminism is anti-rights, by declaration/definition. They promote social responsibilities over individual rights.

You only tested things which proved the hypothesis, not disproved it. Nuff said. I was simply pointing out the flaw in that method. Maybe next time you won't get so teste when someone disagrees with you.

Are you kidding me? Aside from the fact that I have a PhD in theoretical physics, how about we explore some resources... The basic tenant of the Scientific Method is that you can only disprove, you can never prove anything scientifically. The scientific process, an iterative process, uses the repeated acquisition and testing of data through experimental procedures to disprove hypotheses. A hypothesis should have the following characteristics: • It should be a general principle that holds across …

You did not explain that you did the whole alphabet. However, the scientific method looks for ways to disprove things, not prove things. To disprove this theory, you need to check multiple people's computers searching for the same thing, on different IPs.

That is a fine perspective to have. And if you disagree with people, why not just argue your point of view rather than saying that you suddenly no longer agree with the MRM in general? That is like saying, "Well, Apple released the latest iPad so close to the previous one, so I am never buying another Apple product again."

You really aren't understanding the argument that is being made. There are some people who try to push the issue as far as to suggest that men can opt out of child support entirely (maybe even at any point of time they desire). But that is pretty easily counter argued with "rights of the child" arguments, which seem to cover your objection. However, the stronger argument is for men to have an analogous option to abortion, usually called legal paternal surrender, whereby they give up all obligati…

It is unfortunate that it takes personal experience in order to see the problem... I am sorry for your situation, but people need to realize that focusing on the "good effect" of a law while completely disregarding the negative does not make robust, fair laws. Due process is an important right that shouldn't be ignored in our attempts to protect women and minorities (and we should be protecting all people, not just women and minorities).

As an addendum, it really is that last statement that bothers me the most. While I may be a socialist, I believe that there must be a compromise. Feminism is a philosophical ideology spanning a number of topics, including epistemology, ethics and morality. At its core is the belief that human history has been dominated by a way of thinking that is attributed to men (patriarchy), and that the continuing problems of aggression, war and suffering are a direct result of this. Furthermore, it asserts that a gynocentric way of thinking (ie, new epistemology, ethics and morality) can resolve these problems by refocusing the social structure to i…

As for the sex offender thing, I have only ever opposed the ridiculous assertion that allowing child porn reduces pedophile acts. Yup. These people are firmly entrenched in the idea that feminism is an equality movement, that men are an advantaged group (through patriarchy, which also, apparently, "disadvantages men too! which is why men should be feminist also!"), and that the men's rights movement is therefore illegitimate. Since they believe that feminism is an equality movement, they think that being anti-feminist means being anti-equality.

We can't all get along because our actions affect one another, and we are stuck in a constant battle between survival actions and social actions. Women (and men) complaining about the opposite sex generally occurs due to being hurt or harmed in some way, often multiple times, and the human tendency to make generalizations/stereotypes. So the entire opposite gender is treated as a whole, rather than a collection of individuals. But rights movements are generated based on the way society treats groups, and is independent of what you are talking about.

At one point, income taxes in Britain were 95%. How much incentive do you have to make an extra dollar when you only get to keep 5 cents of it? The risk of increasing business to make that extra dollar isn't worth the 5 cents. No income is guaranteed, and an tax rate at 95% is literally going to outweigh the incentive to make an extra buck. Actual costs are going to vary depending on the capability of the parents. But, for example, if the non primary parent will have the kid stay with them, then they need an extra room in their place also. Assuming both parents are renting, then they both need at least a 2 bedroom place, so that shouldn't be factored into child support. The remaining costs are things like health care, dental, food, etc. If the child lives with one parent for 24 days a month and the other for 6 (on average), then th…

Prejudice: preconceived notion not based on experience or reason. You have a reason for wanting a female roommate. You are perfectly allowed to enjoy the company of women. There are some things that women can talk about with each other that men just won't be as... capable of discussing! Nothing wrong with that. Where I think a lot of people will agree that there is a problem is if you were a landlord and wanted a female tenant. Because then there is some discrimination goes on.

I think she makes a very valid statement. In other words: You can stare, but if you treat her as a sexual object then she is going to go away. Let me put it this way... Imagine I am a millionaire. I dress up in an Armani tuxedo, gold rolex, Ferarri, etc - in other words, I am flaunting my money. And let's say that I go to a night club. If the girls there are interested in me, they will talk with me, listen to me, and the discourse will follow our common interests. But if the girls there only ask…

According to Lisak, Kanin's study lacked any kind of systematic methodology and did not independently define a false report, instead recording as false any report which the police department classified as false. But that is EXACTLY what we were just discussing. Are you now rewriting the history of our debate? What is your criticism of the Justice Department's own statistics? That is what you said. While a police station is obviously not the Justice Department, we were trying to discuss the issue…
/r/MensRights17/10/12 10:34 PM

Yeah, when we examine the Justice Department's statistics, we see a very different view of things. Let's examine this one review. Official documents offer a range of figures. The Crown Prosecution Service’s Rape Manual, in a section called Societal Myths, states that “studies have indicated that only 2 per cent of all reported rapes are false, which is slightly less than false reporting in all other crimes”. It gives no references to these studies, but the 2 per cent figure originates in the US …

Pedophilia does not deserve a safe harbor. Not in any way. And his actions that contributed to this--the exact details are a bit foggy, but at the least he seemed to be an instigator of the sexualization of young women--deserve to be outted. So in terms of the overall picture, I don't think anything all that unjust happened to him. I agree about the promotion of child abuse/porn. It is atrocious. There was an article posted here today about how a dictionary is adding a second definition to "misogyny" to reflect how the word is actually used today. I don't think the entire sub is up for the ban hammer. We don't break any of the rules of Reddit, we just have an unpopular point of view. Besides, r/MensRights has always been used as a springboard for people to get involved in other organizations. Fathers & Families, COTWA, A Voice For Men... If people want to start a new site, I highly encourage it. But I wouldn't do it out of fear of /r/MR being banned.

The goal of the MRM is not to avoid responsibility for children. The goals should be the following: a) Improve the current child support system such that both parents have equal rights and equal responsibilities to the child. b) Require some semblance of accountability for child support. c) Criminalize using the child as leverage against the non-custodial parent.

I believe that only groups should act with violence, not individuals. Non-hitting methods can be used to defend one's self without being an aggressor. Many martial arts teach people to defend themselves without hitting people. I can answer more later. Things going on.

If you think Adrien Chen is not a SRS person and a goon, you are a fool. What I think and what I know are different things. I suspect that he is a part of SRS, if not a mod. But I have no evidence.

Not sure of the details. Will update as I find out.

Yes, VA said it, and it has been confirmed.

The link between CreepShots and ViolentAcrez is that they are both part of the same crack down, using essentially the same tactics. It is no secret that there are groups of people organizing to try to take down the seedier side of Reddit. It still stands that a threat was made against r/MensRights to do the same to us as was done to ViolentAcrez (and CreepShots by insinuation). And it still stands that it was some of the same group who opposed the AgentOrange doxxing that were involved with the …

but r/creepshots deserves to be taken down You wish to deny people rights. There is nothing illegal about r/creepshots. You and I may think it is unsavory, but we don't have to visit there if we don't want to. None-the-less, between the two of us - I defend people's rights to do things that are not illegal. Let's see you take a stance against things like the Paparazzi first and the rest of journalism, and then let's see you take on a small organization like /r/creepshots. Get some consistency he…

Agreed. I am looking for proof and will share it if/when I find it.

Ok I get that doxxing this guy was wrong, but none of us are defending r/creepshots in any way are we? If you are then leave. What this subreddit and the ideal version of feminist movements on reddit should be about is promoting rights of ALL, just through specific channels. Your statements are in contradiction. You can't have "rights for all" and then selectively deny rights for people that you don't like.

There is nothing in that post about child support. The only relation to Men's Rights is your editorialized title.

I am a "left wing" person, and I completely disagree with your statement. a) you are over simplifying, and b) your bias is so strong it is disturbing. "Left wing" violent people? Cuba, Russia, China, North Korea... "Right wing" peaceful people? Many American presidents, some Conservative Prime Ministers in Canada, etc. Neither left nor right wing politics should be deemed "good" or "bad", simply "effective" or "ineffective" at making the society flourish.

I don't support doxxing. A person should be judged based on how they treat their enemy, not how they treat their friend. If they are willing to compromise their morals/ethics when dealing with an enemy, they are not a moral/ethical person.

Absolutely not. Doing so will get you banned from /r/MensRights (and from Reddit).

This really isn't on-topic here. While I find the article interesting, I don't think it belongs here. Perhaps you can post it in Meta?

but the argument defending the shutting down of the subreddit is that it's not OK to post pictures of people on the internet without their permission. Apparently people haven't heard of the Paparazzi.

Well, when I get actual confirmation of his involvement in anything, I will be sure to post it. Until then, I like to think that I hold myself to a higher standard.

Based on screenshots of private messages, VA was blackmailed into giving up his account and mod privileges for subreddits he owned. Those subreddits were then modded by SRSers who claimed victory. 'nuff said.

Because r/MensRights is not socially acceptable yet. Feminism is too pervasive, and r/MensRights is very anti-feminism. Many people make the erroneous argument that being anti-feminism is being anti-female, and therefore misogyny. In an age of political correctness, such an accusation can cause problems with employers.

ViolentAcrez was a... famous reddit account. He is famous because a) he has a LOT of karma, and b) because he gained a lot of that karma from some dubious posts (a lot of porn, jailbait, etc). He has typically had his hand in most of the seedier sides of Reddit (things like /r/jailbait, /r/incest, etc.).

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
