India inherited 16 as the age of consent from their British colonial masters – the age of consent having been raised from 13 to 16 at the end of the 19th century in Great Britain as a result of campaigning from social puritans and feminists expoloiting concern at child prostitution in London.

I love how it makes it sound like a bad thing that selling your 13-year-old to a grown man as a "bride" is now illegal in India.

There should be no age of consent. If a minor, the authority over the child should be turned over to the parent to decide if the relationship continues or not. If the parent says "no" then the adult who had the relationship with the child should be barred from visiting/spending time with the minor. Problem solved!

Generally speaking, I'm not seeing a huge problem here. Also, passing a law by an elected parliament is by definition democratic.
