Research shows that having more choices makes people less happy, so it follows that more rigid gender roles create more contentment simply through reducing the number of available choices.

For women, reduced expectations also create less opportunity for failure. You are a lot more likely to achieve your life goals if the best you can expect is winning a bake competition at your church. We are all told that we can become whatever we want, but the truth is that not everyone is good enough to become a president/CEO/top scientist. The rest of us have to resign to a life of mediocrity. And you can't fail if you never get the opportunity to try.

I don't think that dull contentment, stability, and lack of choices should be our top priorities, even if they create more reported happiness on average.
