Well, the lateral trend of every ideological movement affects every country differently, depending on its culture and its sensibilities. From reading this article, it sounds as if the "men's rights" school of thought is having a good impact over there.

East Asian peoples have a very different approach to raising kids and educating them.

the school will focus on character cultivation as part of the daily curriculum. Teaching will focus upon improving the boys' ability to learn, using techniques gathered from previous research and pinpointing known weaknesses within male study patterns. The school hopes to cultivate particular qualities within the students, especially in regards to logical thinking, management skills and craftsmanship, while addressing negative qualities associated with men, such as impatience, and poor planning skills.

In the West, we haven't seen language like this regarding what education ought to be since perhaps the early 1900s. On the other hand, the East never let go of the idea that character building should play a central role in school curriculum.

Of course, more often then not, "building character" means "suppressing individuality"

Well, that's how people think about it, today. And it is true that whatever the prevailing ethic about child rearing happens to be, there will be masses of inexperienced parents who err because of that idea in a certain predictable direction. In my opinion... here in the USA, parents in this era err on the side of not teaching critical thinking. This grows out of the prevalent scientific frame of reference of the "developing mind." The problem is that when you don't treat children as if they can reason from a young age, they won't develop that capacity to its fullest.

In East Asia, there's the opposite problem and parents are way too demanding of their kids. Whereas in the West, we tend to idealize about children and youth in general - over there, they can be much more short with kids and hard on them.

My pet theory is that Japan and Germany had been models for other countries up through the Edwardian Age, and after World War II, we decided that we daren't follow the example of their parenting ethics, and schooling systems anymore. Note that the rebellious era of the 1960s came soon thereafter.

My father grew up in the 1920s and 1930s, and he would tell me how differently kids of his generation were raised. They were expected to "adhere to their parents' standards and values." These days in places like the USA, parents help kids to find their own vision for their future. Even the phrase "grooming kids" has taken on very negative connotations as of this last decade, which shows us how much we've forgotten about how we used to raise our kids.

In the USA with the advent of the civil rights movement and things such as forced desegregation of schools, educators also took a strong dislike to what they call "tracking" kids - that is to say trying to guage what a child's passions and interests and capacities are early on, and guiding him in that way. Many European countries still today have a very robust vocational schooling track.
