Because a single quote, from an article that is not posted online, about something that isn't sexism can be "a proven fact" now.

Perhaps these women weren't doing it out of sexism but because diversity of gender and race/ethnicity on a board of directors is associated with better financial performance.

For instance Erhardt, Werbel, and Shrader in 2003 (all men if that matters) found:

This study examines the relationship between demographic diversity on boards of directors with firm financial performance. This relationship is examined using 1993 and 1998 financial performance data (return on asset and investment) and the percentage of women and minorities on boards of directors for 127 large US companies. Correlation and regression analyses indicate board diversity is positively associated with these financial indicators of firm performance.

Similarly Carter, Simkins, and Simpson also in 2003 found that:

After controlling for size, industry, and other corporate governance measures, we find significant positive relationships between the fraction of women or minorities on the board and firm value. We also find that the proportion of women and minorities on boards increases with firm size and board size, but decreases as the number of insiders increases.

Finally here is a case-study of IBM, an organization that has made sure to have executives of diverse genders, races and ethnicities, and sexual orientations. They found that IBM was able to expand into markets they had not before. I'm not going to quote anything because I think the entire thing is worth reading.

So having a diverse board appears to be a good financial move for companies. Companies have to turn a profit and if having a more diverse board helps them do so, then they are going to work toward a more diverse board.

Furthermore I find it hilarious the thought that male executives are being discriminated when in 2010 84% of British executives in the top 100 companies were men. And that the number of women executives has virtually stopped increasing in proportion since 2008.
