Hello /r/asktrp!
I've began my journey of bettering myself recently. There's a SHIT TON of work to be done, it's a hard pill to swallow, but I've began my journey.
Today I want to ask about self-confidence issues, and I do not mean exclusively to women or interacting with them. This is a different chapter, one that I still need work on, but today I ask about group interactions.
This lack of confidence comes especially when doing something new. Thinking back, this interaction happened yesterday, and in hindsight, I immediately turned "beta boy" so to say, self-confidence shattered. Recently, I've started going out every weekend with a group of people to play football (soccer, to be exact, for US based ppl). I am not very good, but I'm making progress, and I'm quite satisfied how things are progressing.
Yesterday though I've been teamed up with one very vocal individual about my mistakes and fuck ups. Every pass was a bad pass, every decision was a bad one etc etc Self-confidence shattered, I've instantly turned into head down and "sorry man, my bad, I'm trying my best" - but as games go on things got worse for my morale and everything.
How do you strenghten your confidence in these types of situations? What should be the approach, mentally speaking? There's no way to learn football on your own. Ok, you can improve your shooting and such, but you always get better by actually playing, just like you get with women by going out and interacting with them. If I'm in a more "friendly"-er team, I tend to perform better, by being more relaxed, but aggressive critique instantly shatters all my self-confidence.
For a little background, I'm still marked by the many years of mental abuse from my father that repeatedly called me useless and a piece of shit, and never being good enough. So there's a lot of work to do, but I'm asking where should you go mentally in a situation like this? In a field where you're not good, so confidence in your skill is not present? I know I can't shoot very good (yet!) or dribble like crazy (yet!), but I'm striving for improvement every week.
Just develop a thick skin? Ignore the remarks and focus on my own game? Retaliate? I've been thinking about this since last night.
Thank you in advance.
