The simple fix is to limit the amount of time citizens can be imprisoned without trial. I think applying the same standard police are beholden to without charging someone is the right place to start, which would limit contempt of court "sentences" to 2 or 3 days in most cases, which is what it should be IMO. If someone's worthy of going to jail for a weeks, months, or in some cases more than a decade, then that cause had damn well better be criminal and the person charged and tried to the full extent of the law. Throwing someone in prison, without a trial or legal council, is beyond the pale.
