Should gender even be considered at all? If were all for equal rights then at no point should gender come into a decision.

The title submitted by AnnArchist wrongly places blame on the single woman candidate for the spot, who isn't to blame for being the only woman. If she if chosen, it may be because she is simply the best candidate, but the title assumes the only reason she could be chosen is because of her gender. Even if she were chosen for her gender, that would not be in her control, she could not have 'used' her gender in any way.

Like there is any other way to select candidates for a job? Of course gender must come second to ability. Any other way of doing it is tokenism and actually hurts the female cause. The public must have the perception that all people appointed to these positions are the best available. Anything less will seriously detract from whatever credibility the justice system has.

There are reasons for the lack of female involvement in political and legal spectrums - these need to be addressed before complaining about lack of diversity.

A good area to observe the power of this is in sci-tech fields, such as engineering. Female enrollment in engineering classes has skyrocketed, with higher interest in mathematics, science, etc. More girls are also going for higher ed. in these fields, a phenomenon really starting to be seen in Generation X.

People so often look at the end result, trying to fix that. It is not an employer's fault that the pool only has one female. Encouragement and equal treatment in schools for different fields makes a big difference, as has been observed. Hopefully the effects on Gen. X coming into play will have the same influence on law/politics, but its okay if women choose other fields/lifestyles too.

As a woman, I would feel pretty low if I only earned a job for my sex and not merit. I don't kick ass for nothing.
