Here's a simple idea for a teacher (or a parent) to try: Create "boys" and "girls" bookshelves. (Put the same books on each, just make sure each shelf includes adventure stories, sports and science fiction.) Here's another bigger step: Separate the boys and girls into separate reading groups. Let the boys compete against other boys to see who reads the best out loud, or who reads the most books in a month.

Yeah, segregation in school.. that'll go over well with all the "feminist" women who will immediately assume that the boys are getting something better.

This actually makes a lot of sense now that I think about it...

If you think of what is defined as masculinity by our culture it's always brawn over brains. As a result in many cultures around the united states learning is considered feminine. Who rules the school yard? The smartest kid or the strongest kid? I remember being bullied back in elementary school and being smart certainly never saved me.

I agree with the author of this book. We need to make reading seem more masculine and the best way to do this is by offering a wide range of books to young students. When I was in elementary school we had to read a certain amount of books outside of class. My school was rather old and as a result was filled with donated adventure books. I always chose books that had a strong plot rather than strong characters. I never really wanted to analyze a character's motivation I just wanted to see some cool action scenes. Sometimes I often just chose books because they had a cool sounding title. However sometimes I got more than I bargained for... See Chinese Handcuffs. Never thought a book about molestation would be in an elementary school library...

Looks like its about time for the AAUW to conjure up from whole cloth a "study" that refutes the obvious and rebuts the indisputable - which will be reiterated ad nauseum in the media. "Women's group says boys not in crisis; women reporters agree"

Parents especially fathers with boys need to step up and shoulder some of the responsibility here. I strongly feel that no matter how abysmal an education system is, if you take your kids to the library often, read extensively yourself and offer positive reinforcement to kids for reading then your child will be very unlikely to be a poor reader.
