there are American colonial-era laws against wife beating and rape, there were the Etruscan (the culture that occupied Rome before the legendary Romulus and Rhemus built Rome) statues that portrayed women and men as equal, and there were cultural hints from many areas before this century.

the "rule of thumb" myth has been debunked - it never meant that women can be beaten with rods as (long, thick, wide, round, etc) as a thumb.

the quote that "After a few thousand years of men getting a freebie on beating women, the women tend to get the benefit of the doubt these days." is so all-encompassing and hyperbolic as to be ludicrous. Even if you could prove that 59.6% or 90% of all cultures prized women as persons unworthy to be hit in anger, that wouldn't "disprove" that some men - or women, for that matter - have beaten, raped, and pillaged with impunity. You also couldn't prove it without being "guilty" of pointing out "the patriarchy" and promulgating its paternalistic, protectionist poison.

But you could point out Elizabeth of Bathory, Agrippina the Younger, Agrippina the Elder, Cleopatra, and a few of the other "most evil women" to be googled at your leisure.

The response is simple. Whether or not women were allowed to be beaten in the past this does not justify things like the VAWA in the present. The women of today are not owed anything due to the supposed suffering of women in the past, and likewise men of today owe women nothing for suffering men may have caused women in the past. The son is not responsible for the sins of the father.

Also, what's really rediculous about this is that men share just as much DNA in common with the 'oppressed' women of the past as men do, and women have just as much DNA from the 'oppressive' men in them as we men do.

It's like with slavery. I will never apologise to a black man for slavery. My dad never had slaves, nor my grandfather. A black man today would never have been a slave to a white man in the UK, nor would his father. So I owe no apologies.

In summary, unless a woman is 1000 years old and so has lived in an age where women were freely beaten, she can STFU.
