I can't help but think that part of the "marriage strike" men may be on is just simple economics. With the amount of debt the average person has had for the last decade plus, I think men may be less able to take that next step of being the traditional breadwinner for a family, or even just helping to support a spouse. Men may feel like they're having enough trouble supporting themselves so they may not even want to consider what would happen if they got married and had a child or two (or three). While some will say that joining two incomes together under one roof can help make things smoother and more cost effective, I don't really know how many single men really view it that way, knowing that in spite of what feminists have been saying for decades the reality is that there is a real possibility the woman will end up at home raising the children. Even if she doesn't, and both parents work, then there's the additional expense of child care, schooling, etc.

Feminism in today's society has also pushed the single woman agenda. It's only fair that men are allowed the same. Look at shows like "Sex in the City" for examples, although the "You go grrrrl" mentality has gone on for longer than that. We've seen more and more single mothers and are told about how single mommyhood is awesome and so empowering for women. (Obama has said that absentee fathers are a problem, too!)

Men nowadays don't believe it is character building to be nagged endlessly by a neurotic woman, just because she has tits and a twat. When 'comittment' feels a lot like 'being comitted' they opt for a bit o' peace of mind instead. Simple.

Capitalist Consumerism is a system of oppression for all of us who are caught in it. I am not by the way any kind of Socialist.

In the Seventies there emerged a crisis in productivity in the Western Democracies. The Soviet Union was extremely powerful and the West was loosing the Vietnam war.

Most of the Industrial Plant in North America was running one or sometimes two eight hour shifts a day. In order to rapidly increase productivity, it was deemed necessary to get women out of the home and into the workplace. Enter Feminism! The Corporate Media pushed it hard.

At the beginning, two income families were able to afford new luxuries and still have money left over. Couples were able to save up so that the Wife could take a year or two off to have a baby. Or just stay home all together.

This had an adverse effect on productivity.

That is when income taxes started to be adjusted to force both man and woman to go to work.

We need political activism to adjust the tax code so that working families with children again pay very little in taxes.

One breadwinner families of either sex would radically alter the entire stress filled economic environment in which, couples set out to get married and establish a family.
