It's very common today for people to express a fear or anxiety over how society just seems "off"...people are tense and divided and angry, and don't really seem to know what's going on. Even if you think Trump is clearly an example of everything that's wrong today, you probably have the sense that it's more complicated than just him, and started before him.
I'll tell you my theory on what's happening- this is has been my worldview since 2010, and I've slowly watched all of my predictions come true. I actually thought things would be worse by now, but mostly I've been right.
We're seeing this "disturbance" happen where society seems to be getting pulled into one of two different "sides"
I kinda hate making those two categories because it's far more complicated and nuanced than that, with lots of inbetween, but I think most people can generally see what I mean. There's this great tension and it's just like you say...people can just "feel it", but can't quite put it into words.
I'll tell you what I think it is. I'm mostly on the second "side", although I grew up calling myself a liberal and still "feel" that way at heart. But there's something happening that I think I noticed in 2010 that people are only slowly starting to notice.
The whole "SJW/intersectional feminist" sphere is being controlled by a core network of psychopaths. It's being used a vehicle for social and political influence/power. It's something called a political ponerology- essentially, psychopaths recognize each other and agree to cooperate for mutual benefit. Does it ever feel like social buzzwords (eg 'mansplaining') suddenly seem to pop up all over the world at the same time? And do you ever see phrases that look familiar such as "structural systems of oppression", "the need for gender mainstreaming to address gender dynamics of violence" during debates and such, that just don't seem organic? Like, it's all being scripted from the same place? Like it somehow 'sounds good', is very hard to counter, but you can just tell it's obviously wrong?
This is how psychopaths construct language. It's called milieu control. It's a tool of mass social manipulation and influencing. Red the description, and see if it reminds you of modern day SJWs:
Milieu control involves the control of communication within a group environment, that also may (or may not) result in a significant degree of isolation from surrounding society. When non-group members, or outsiders, are considered or potentially labeled as less valuable without basis for stated group-supported and group-reinforced prejudice, group members may have a tendency to then consider themselves as intellectually superior, which can limit alternate points of view, thus becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy in which group members automatically begin to devalue others and the intellect of others that are separate from their group, without logical rationale for doing so. Additionally, Milieu control "includes other techniques to restrict members' contact with the outside world and to be able to make critical, rational, judgments about information
Certain ideas and people are automatically wrong...like "you're just a white male?" Sound familiar? Ever see these phrases?
"You're not here to argue in good faith, you've already made up your mind"
"Don't debate him, he's an alt-right/Trumper/VOX/fascist. Don't give them a platform"
"It's clear this conversation will not be productive because you are closed minded. I no longer wish to continue this discussion with you."
Just because I say something like "you know, statistically, boys are doing worse in school and male victims of domestic abuse exist"?? Really?
The more radical feminists of today remind me of the Red Guards of the culturally revolution which ended up in 60 million deaths. Read about them, they also remind me todays SJWs.
Does it feel like all of this suddenly started in 2014, and started to cross over into being actually concerning in 2016? Almost as if by design.
Now the giant wrinkle in all this is Trump. Trump is VERY confusing to many people, myself included. I want to not like him, but I'm glad he's opposing the SJW side. People who think he's the more fascist one have no idea how much worse it might have been. But Trump, as a president, would never be a president I'd ordinarily support. It feels like my own mind has been distorted into being more "alt right" because I'm being played against the "other side." That said, I stand by my diagnosis of the SJW side. I know saying "the SJW side" sounds overly simplistic, and it is...again it's vastly complex and nuanced and confusing. As to where it came from, that's no more clear.
The USSR funded many feminist and leftist political groups starting in the 50s. This guy is a former KGB agent and gives excellent talks on how the USSR tried to subvert the United States socially. Death from within. The numbers Mason! What do they mean! Isn't far off from the sort of thing they did (and likely continue to do). But again, it's far more complicated than that and has likely evolved significantly in the last 50 years. Am I saying today's feminists are actually a Russian op? No, I'm saying the origins stretches way further than 2014. And the thing is, the entire core message of the SJW side is right- equality is good, racism and sexism are bad, etc. That's exactly how a good political ponerology works, and exactly what Mao built his Red Guard following, by saying all good things.
I think this video is bullshit. It is, IMO, a perfect example of the kind of dishonest manipulation I'm talking about...EXCEPT....there is a very large problematic population on the "alt right side!" I would agree- there are legitimate racists and idiots and bigots. So where does that leave me? It's confusing as hell, and it's why you feel so stressed.
5 years ago I would said we'd be at civil war, possibly globally (a world war?) by 2020. That hasn't happened because I think enough people started to "sense it" in time to stop the tipping point. I always saw the election of Trump as a subconscious recognition of this- and let me repeat again to be clear, Trump is NOT a president I want to like at all- and it'll be very interesting to see what happens in 2020.
For the record, my ideal government is a dictatorship led by myself. My second choice would be a dictatorship led by Aubrey de Grey (who've met and is awesome).

You're not the only one out there that has recognized within the progressive left a moral authoritarianism and a revolutionary fervor that inherently veers into totalitarianism, and compared them to the maoist red guards. It's an apt comparison and a smart observation, in my view.
