Another interesting spin on this would be to make appointments on each other's phones or on email calendars. You could give a mundane label for the appointment, and then write the details in the description. Set a reminder alarm to go off on the day in question and voila!

The downside to this of course is that you would know ahead of time when the other person would get the alarm.

For anyone that's still a bit too nervous about scattering around notes - you could keep them all in a box, and then set up something weird that has to happen as a trigger that prompts you to go to the box and draw out a note. For example, "if I get some coins as part of my change after buying something - and the year ends in '2' or '6' - then I will draw a note when I get home." Another could be "if I 5 (or less than 5) red lights by the time I get home - then I draw a note." The idea being that you designate different real-world outcomes/interactions/possibilities as the prompt. The benefit is that the prompts can still be randomized, and you don't have to worry about the notes being found by someone else.
