(Using a throwaway) I’m in an LDR with my boyfriend of eight months. I last saw him when he flew me in on his birthday and stayed for five days. I’m in the Northeast, he’s down South. By the time, we will see each other again in a few weeks it will be two months.

I expressed to him that I wanted him with me on my birthday as well. I’ve always spent it alone or miserable due to failed plans, and I was really looking forward to spending it with him. I don’t care about gifts, parties, cake, etc. And my mom died a few months ago, and birthdays and holidays are depressing knowing she won’t be around for it.

We went over flights last week and yesterday he ended up buying tickets for the day after my birthday and will be flying in late, so I’m basically losing another day with him.

I’m trying to be grateful that I’ll get to see him period but I’m really upset.

We talked about it briefly last night, and he understood why I was sad about it but he didn’t explain why. And the tickets were the same price the day before and more convenient with less layovers and his work schedule is very flexible so neither were a factor. I’m struggling to move on from this and kind of bummed not only about the birthday thing but basically only having three days with him due to losing a fourth day with him flying all day.

Do I just get over this and be thankful he’s coming to see me or talk things out to avoid future situations like this?
