There’s a philosophy called the tender years doctrine which essentially states mothers are more important to a child than fathers which was once officially used for child custody. While this is no longer is official, the bias lives on.

Related, men’s groups have been fighting for states to adopt a policy of assumed joint custody and have had some success. Feminists of course oppose this, wanting women to be automatically favored. You can goto NOW’s website and read where they publicly oppose the presumption of equal joint custody. It’s one of many examples of feminists claiming to support gender equality while at the same time fighting for women to be advantaged.
