Yesterday was Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. About 2,400 people died during the attack on Pearl Harbor that day. Some were not even combatants. The vast majority were young men who were just trying to protect their country.

Even the attackers who lost their lives were young men who were acting to defend the interests of their country.

I'm not saying this to defend anyone's actions or make anyone look bad. I'm saying this because thousands of young men lost their lives. The remains of many were never recovered so that their families could give them a proper burial.

The survivors have lived for decades with the physical and mental scars of what happened on that day.

The collective anger from those attacks were mobilized to fuel racist policies and a World War (We know the story).

What happened was evil. Not just because of the surprise attack that killed thousands of people but because of the insanity of sending hundreds of young men to kill thousands of other young men.

People don't seem to understand the human cost of war. The next time someone wants to tell you that an all-male military draft is the right way to organize society remind them of the horrors of war.
