Recent studies agree: the risks of circumcision outweigh any benefits. It’s time to rethink our permissive approach to genital cutting.

Basically aren't any benefits

[–]Pertinaxfall 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Which benefits?

[–]CanComplex8695 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The medical industry makes money from it.

Article says

apparent benefits of circumcision, such as preventing urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases and penile cancer

Like the study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3139859/

There was a strong protective effect of childhood/adolescent circumcision on invasive penile cancer (OR = 0.33; 95% CI 0.13–0.83; 3 studies).

Men circumcised in childhood/adolescence are at substantially reduced risk of invasive penile cancer, and this effect could be mediated partly through an effect on phimosis.

The posted article takes those studies into consideration, like how common penile cancer is (not common) etc

Ridiculous. So you are amputating a male body part to prevent a urinary tract infection that is cured with 3 days of antibiotics? What should we amputate to prevent otitis or rhinitis? Here in Europe from Portugal to Russia no male is circumcised and the prevalence of penile cancer is virtually zero.

[–]handemande1 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right. There are benefits as mentioned, but also as mentioned, the risks of the procedure may not be worth the minor benefits which is elaborated on in the article.

...Amputating.

[–]IngoTheGreat 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Considering the facts that it meets the dictionary definition and has been referred to repeatedly in the medical literature as an amputation for at least 140-odd years...yes.

It's disgusting that y'all are going this far.

Facts are facts, man.
