You're dating their daughter, their prized piece of their family. They are looking at couple things (1) are you capable of taking care of their daughter? (2) do you make her happy? (3) would you make a good addition to the family? It doesn't matter whether you intend to ever marry anybody, each time around family is an audition. I understand you are shy so I'm not going to try to tell you to not be because that takes time (it's taken me a decade to become extroverted). Here's what you do. Start treating it like an audition for a play. Be the good son they would always want. Always make their daughter smile around her family. Offer to help around the house or do dishes after they cook for you. Make an effort to remember the names of extended family and ask about how they are doing. Most importantly DO NOT TELL YOUR GF that you are doing this, it needs to appear natural and she may unintentionally make it appear as though your efforts have ulterior motives. You have to charm them. This is great practice for you to improve as a man, charm is a very important attribute to develop. Good luck.

asks some question for then to answer them, "make" them talk about themselves,dinner night? "how/where did you learn how to cook so good?" basically apply the principles of how to win friends and influence people, learn what they like and let them talk about it, at least pretend to be interested and ask some follow up questions.

False statement, either she's uglier or the more likely conclusion you're not a 6 mate. Don't sell yourself short.

First impression are everything, you should have acted like apart of the family not a stranger, smile often and be comfortable around them. Welcome conversation with family members.

Be respectful to the parents. If you last with the gf, they will wear down over time.

Also, is there any way you can buddy up with/develop a friendship with the other guy and thus enjoy the "halo effect"?

Nothing good comes from getting to know the girl's parents. Unless you're getting married (which is stupid) or if they're your children's grandparents, your relationship is none of their business.
