A short while back, I was facilitating courses for unemployed people and there was a section on accidents at work. One of the videos gave the figure of 189 deaths at work in a year in Australia. I got to thinking this is a pretty low total in a country with 12, 000, 000 full-time workers and got to looking at other causes of avoidable deaths.

Road deaths; we're looking at around 1300 p.a. Key for me is learning to relax at the wheel and enjoying the relaxation. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front. If someone cuts in front of you, it's added around 2s to your journey. If thirty people do that in a forty-five minute commute, it's still only cost you one minute, not worth stressing out about. Certainly not worth risking an accident over.

Suicides; the male suicide rate is commensurate with the male road death rate. Talk to someone if you need to, look out for others.

And there is one which gets very little attention; skin cancer which kills about as many as all the causes previously listed combined at around 2,200 p.a. These are avoidable deaths; check your skin, take anything suspicious to a doctor. Early treatment is easy and reliable.
