Too much "we need to have high self esteem to be happy" mambo jumbo ended up getting rooted in our collective thought and it has began to get around as "we need to validate crap so we don't hurt people's precious self esteem".

When it comes to body positive, feminism takes the cause and says "women don't have to look sexual to straight male standards to be pretty, forget the male gaze, stop patriarchy oppression".

Shame and self-recrimination doesn't help people make good choices for themselves, the opposite in fact.

But people with money and power don't want you to make productive choices for yourself.

If you can convince someone to feel insecure, and then pretend to offer a fake solution, you can make a lot of money and even get political office. (Trojan "Magnum" condoms for example.) Being an insecure beta is great for everyone in society except you.

Women have known this instinctively since the dawn of the species, of course. The man who first wrote about this fact explicitly was a guy named Edward L. Bernays, who is considered the founder of modern advertising and Public Relations.

So body-negativity and fat-negativity in our culture is absolutely a modern trend, from the last 75 years or so. And the reason it exists is it's immensely profitable. People buy houses they don't need, so they can fill up with stuff they don't want, to impress their neighbors and coworkers, whom they fear are silently judging them. To pay for this they just accept jobs that require way too much time and effort. They deal with the stress and emotional pain by neglecting exercise activities, their social lives, and eating themselves sick.

So, it's absolutely a manufactured problem.

80 years ago few people cared if a woman wasn't beanpole skinny, that meant you were poor, vulgar, and uneducated. Middle and upper class women had reasonable amounts of body fat.

Overweight and obesity was rare because people only sat down for meals, not to watch TV/computer. They walked to the grocery store and to work, cooked most meals themselves from scratch, and generally did laundry by hand. Most jobs involved frequent standing and walking around to get Something you needed. Exercise was mandatory to avoid starving or bathing in your own filth.

So obesity is generally an indicator of a lack of cooking skills and a lack of spending hours a day walking/standing.

Would you be fine with your child being over weight? No? Then why try fight child obesity but praise 'plus sized' models?
