I haven't seen any mentions of the movie after release. I've just watched it and the connection to toxic masculinity is unwarranted.

Harper Marlowe decides to spend a holiday alone in the small village of Cotson following the apparent suicide of her husband James. In flashbacks, it is revealed that Harper, fed up with James' emotional abuse and manipulation, intended to divorce him, leading James to threaten her with his suicide. After James hit her, Harper locked him out of the flat before witnessing him fall from an upstairs balcony to his death, being partially impaled by a fence.

Nothing can be taken at face value. How this movie has been treated is, if it's on screen it must have happened. But it's more inline with other movies like Identity or Ghost Stories. Both of those movies are set aside from reality.

My original theory is the whole movie is set within a psychologists' office. The parts about a flat in London are of Harper retelling what happened (the suicide) and the parts about the village and the cottage is an area created by the psychologist, which are usually used to try to calm their patient down (like think of a green field. There's a breeze. It's sunny). But that caused other things to bubble to the surface -- represented by the men with the same face. Those seem to be emotional manifestations (paranoia, suspicion, regret, grief, blame, etc). The main two themes seem to be the lack of consequences and facing grief. There's an element of lack of empathy, seeing things from someone else's perspective, understanding others, etc. But that's marred by the suicide threats

There's something off about the whole movie. When you try to guess what's going on the mechanics change somewhat. It's a lattice that tries you throw you off, some red herrings thrown in and pointless metaphors.

I suppose it could be similar to a Rorschach test and you add in those missing details yourself, like how it was linked to toxic masculinity by the reviewing press. But that phrase is pretty much near the top of their phrase usage
