In my English class we have to read To kill a Mockingbird and when we were discussing the part in the story about Scout's teacher in first grade. One of the girls says that since the teacher assumed Atticus taught her it was sexist because she didn't think a woman could teach her.

Is it just me or is it fair to assume that a child with no mother was taught to read by their father who is a well respected individual in Maycomb and a Lawyer instead of a woman?
