An interesting interview discussing neurobiology, mental health, economics, and media--the reckless use of the academic term "toxic masculinity" as it entered the common lexicon and the backlash; the gender inequity at the apex says nothing about how gender inequity manifests farther down; girls reach puberty earlier, so pre-frontal cortex matures earlier (1 year ahead in English and even in math in h.s., e.g.*) and boys catch up in early 20s; GPA gender gap but no gap in standardized tests, b/c pre-frontal cortex has to do with time management, which GPA rewards; suicide gap related to loss of sense of worth to society; exploitation of male struggles by pols who channel the struggling but have no policies; the left isn't comfortable acknowledging inequalities going the other way, or it adopts the language of individualism (unusually) to cast blame back on the struggler; infrastructure bill helps working-class men preferentially and college debt relief helps women preferentially, but Dem pols risk blowback from constituency if they play up the former
