This is a stupid, sexist way to tell the (horrifying and tragic) story. It's stupid and sexist in the direction opposite of what we've come to expect, but that doesn't make it better. These girls have fathers as well. It even sounds as though they have fathers married to the mothers, residing in the home. We're supposed to single out the mothers for blame? Why on earth?

EDIT: oh, because some white dude in the neighborhood singled them out, and this journalist is lazy:

"It is this aspect of Cambodia's appalling child sex trade that Don Brewster, a 59-year-old American resident of the neighborhood, finds most difficult to countenance. "I can't imagine what it feels like to have your mother sell you, to have your mother waiting in the car while she gets money for you to be raped," he says. "It's not that she was stolen from her mother -- her mother gave the keys to the people to rape her."

You'd think a fundamentalist Christian pastor like Mr. Brewster would be all concerned about where the dads were in all this. Or about the terrible poverty that leads parents to make these appalling choices. Guess that would have made the story too complex.
