Female doctor vs male doctor? Is there a big difference?

I am in med school now so I have some perspective on this. In general there is not much difference in ability between the male and female students. There are dullards and rockstars in both genders. The differences are less tangible than that. The female students seem less mature and they engage in toxic behavior like spreading rumors and gossip, forming cliques, backstabbing, etc. They complain endlessly about everything and run to the faculty at the slightest provocation. It seems to me they learned this behavior in middle school and they are still doing it into their 20's.

I'm speaking in generalities, of course. There are several female colleagues who I've always seen behave respectably.

Another med student here, about to graduate. Here's my experience:

The difference is not one of intelligence or competency. You shouldn't really be too worried about that. Where I have noticed a consistent difference is in treatment style and general clinical behavior.

I find that the female doctors tend to be much more interested in doing "the right thing" as defined from a systems perspective than the male doctors. In other words, they tend to treat patients as more similar than distinct. They are less likely to say, "I feel this patient doesn't quite fit the basic rules we follow, so I'm going to deviate from them." As a result, you get somewhat less personalized care. Again, this can be either good or bad, and often it can be hard to know. None of this should be surprising. Women value consensus more than men, and so will stick more closely to guidelines and put less individual consideration into your specific circumstances. There's no doubt that there's a place for this, and it is a valid treatment strategy.

In contrast men are more likely to treat each patient differently, to deviate from guidelines, and to consider the specific of each case independently. Again, this can be good or bad. When you get a male doctor you're more likely to get a cowboy than with a female doctor.

A major thing that I notice on the personality side: Women doctors seem on average (NOT ALWAYS) to be less empathetic than male doctors. Don't get me wrong, they care about their patients, but it always seems less genuine to me. When talking to my female colleagues and superiors it seems almost like they focus more on how patients MAKE THEM FEEL, rather than on how that patient his or herself feels. It's just kinda the nature of female solipsism. Please note this isn't just restricted to their male vs female patients, but ALL their patients. Another way to put it: men in medicine seem to possess more empathy, women more sympathy.

That being said, often the BEST doctors who you really want to have are the women who are really maternal and feminine (read family women). These are usually older docs, because younger docs were taught by society that being feminine is bad.

tl:dr; You can get great care from both. One is not smarter than the other on balance. Men tend to be more likely to approach your care as a unique situation and appreciate your experience. Women tend to be more systems oriented and likely to treat you like every other patient while being less influenced and sympathetic to your feelings.

I dont think gender is a sufficient to determine a doctor. Unless you feel wired showing her your pee-pee. I personally don't care though cuz tons of women have seen my peep

Female docs can be more impersonal and cold, the right male doc will feel just like talking to your buddy about cars except it's your body and you'll be able to open up more to him.

I doubt it. They do the same tests. You're overthinking this women/men thing.
