Two kids under 16 have sex. Only the boy is allowd to be prosecuted and placed on the offenders register. Girls are not prosecuted by law.

Where are you from?

The story we tell ourselves is that we used to be pious and ignorant peasants but we're becoming modern and sophisticated. Key episodes in that story: television (1960), President Mary Robinson (1989). That was the story a few years ago, anyway. That narrative has taken some backwards steps in the past few years.

Some social intricacies:

Apart from the Northern Ireland situation, more peace in the past century (since the early 1920s to be more precise) than almost any country in history has ever experienced. We haven't been invaded, had our cities bombed, or had men drafted for foreign wars. We associate this with our noble policy of military neutrality. The reality is that we let the British and Americans fight and die for us, while pretending to be morally superior. The gender consequence is that it's been a long time since Irish men have ever been seen as defenders of the home and nation.
Apart from the Celtic Tiger bubble, we've had a failed economy, double-digit unemployment most of the time. The gender consequence is that Irish men have often had difficulty even fulfilling the male role of bringing home a paycheck.
Catholic guilt, moral bullying. When feminists said that male sexuality is toxic and that we should spend our time examining our consciences and doing penance, they weren't telling Irish men anything they hadn't been told before. The preacher had changed, the sermon was the same.
Emigration as an economic and social safety valve. We export our problems. People who don't fit in leave instead of starting revolutions. This has been repeated over generations, and has given the whole country a small-town mentality.
The Australian phenomena of cultural cringe and tall poppy syndrome also apply in Ireland.
A patriarchy is where the man rules the home. Irish homes are ruled by the Irish Mammy.
