I made another post about activism which touched on Movember, but all of the questions seemed to be about Movember, so I figured I should address that directly, and in more detail:
First and foremost, you need to register on their website, and hopefully with a team, even if you don't end up raising any money; if you do not do this, you're pretty much just growing a mustache for yourself, using a charity as an excuse.
Second, you must be clean shaven on November 1st, the awkward, hilarious, and embarrassing nature of a mustache growing in is the point - it starts conversations, raising awareness. Starting early is, again, just growing a 'stache for yourself.
Third, a beard is not a mustache, nor is a goatee, however a flavor-saver/tickler is an acceptable addition; again, a mustache growing in is the point, a beard is for No-Shave November, which is a frat tradition, and thus doesn't help Men's Rights whatsoever.
Fourth, if you cannot grow a mustache, that's okay; last year a team named "we can't grow mustaches" raised almost £400, women can and do participate as well; plus, Charlie Chaplin wore a lip-wig in The Tramp, if you want, give that a try!
Fifth, if you already have facial hair, get donations to shave on the 1st, and start fresh for Movember; if you have a beard, I'm sure there are people in your life who wonder what's under there, especially women - use this to your advantage!
Sixth, participate in the events, they're a lot of fun, they help the charity, and turn that awkward growth into an awesome bonding experience, as does taking on Movember with the aforementioned team of friends.
Seventh, host your own events, they're easy to register, and no more complicated than adding a small ($1-$5) cover at the door; Movember will send you some mustache related swag to distribute, and people love theme parties!
Eighth, don't worry about criticism, it's dealt with as easily as, "I'm raising money for charity, what's your excuse?"
Ninth, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right, simply growing the 'stache, or neglecting to shave, is a lot like participating in an AIDs marathon by watching it through the window of a McDonald's; all that does is prove detractors right when they say MRAs don't accomplish anything.
Tenth, have fun!
The official website can be found here; and, here's a TED Talk from the founder.
