One very familiar silencing tactic in gender discussions is the accusation of misogyny. Given the gynonormative value system of our culture, a charge of hating women is a scathing accusation. People have been seeing through it more and more, but it is still matter of some concern among MRM commenters. On r/MensRights it’s quite common to find comments warning that the MRM will never have any credibility as long as there are people saying misogynist things.

Credibility with whom? Credibility is not some free-floating, self-existent substance or some kind of trait that a person inherently has or doesn’t. It arises when someone finds you credible. That’s all. So the first question is: “credible to whom?”

Because there may well be lots of people, and perhaps the ones whose opinions will end up making an actual difference, who aren’t quite so hyper-sensitive to misogyny or consider it some kind of abomination-before-the-Lord invalidating flaw.

... Misandry was never enough of a problem to feminism that it kept feminists from achieving their aims; why should misogyny impede the MRM any more? I don’t appreciate the way charges of misogyny have the power to shut people down, to be debate-stoppers, so I refuse to regard misogyny as some kind of heinous sin. I am not interested in worrying about the hurt feelings of people who think you or I are sub-human.

The woman-obsessed chap who either bashes females or extols Blazing Frank, is as much a sign of the times as Blazing Frank himself, and to speak of any objective duty to "discipline" this commenter is a damnable feminist evasion, for it misses the point and continually re-inscribes the feminist narrative. It obscures the truth and fails to hold feminism accountable—and we must above all things hold feminism accountable!

I actually agree with this. If you want to have a movement that achieves something for men then you have to police the unsavory elements.

Before you say it, I understand that there are unsavory elements in any organization, that doesn't mean we should let them have the loudest voices.

What are some examples of "misogyny" in here that don't get downvoted to hell? Men have every right to be angry at women if all they've ever experienced with women is being used, abused and betrayed. Sharing those experiences here whether it's to vent, to seek advice or to present as a cautionary tale does not constitute as misogyny...it's men coming together and doing what they've been programmed by society NOT to do and that is talk to each other about their problems.

It has nothing to do with demeaning women which seems to be the undercurrent that many of the posts here take.

What posts exactly are you referring to? Posts that refer to articles on women breaking the law or otherwise behaving badly? Women demean themselves by their unlawful and immoral actions.

Maybe there needs to be a reddit subgroup Men'sRightsnotMisogyny.

I actually agree - to an extent. At some point we have to accept that we can't simply ban everything that may be interpreted as hatred of women. That being said most misogynistic comments get downvoted pretty toughly, which is a reasonable interpretation of not being tolerated. Yes, some still slip though and go unnoticed, that is unfortunate. I think the best thing we can do is ensure that misogyny is not allowed to dominate discussion - accept that it exists, and push it to the bottom where it belongs.
