NEW DELHI: Adopting a liberal view, the Delhi high court has awarded six years imprisonment to a woman...

Justice S P Garg on Wednesday reduced the seven year jail term awarded by the trial court to Shakuntala taking note of mitigating circumstances including that she has no issue and was in custody from the very beginning and has already undergone imprisonment for over three years. HC also took into account the fact she had no past history of a criminal case, she earned remissions and her overall jail conduct is satisfactory.

It is still a very light sentence for murder, but the reduction in sentence was less than time already served, which (I hope) was the main reason for reducing the sentence.
