Greetings all,
So I recently got into a discussion about rape culture on /r/changemyview, and in that discussion, I complained that using the term rape culture is grossly misleading and, well, I'll just quote myself here:
I resist the terminology "rape culture" because it's misleading, and I'm very suspicious of their [feminists] motives for using such a term. It's like if a politician declares a state of emergency so that he can grant himself extra powers, but then those powers never really go away. I have the same suspicions when feminist "academics" put forth this claim that our entire society is a "rape culture." It's misleading when you think that the problem is being perpetuated by a few outlets in certain subcultures, but it gives them the headlines to give the impression that our society is in a dire state. Then they use that fabricated state of emergency to gain influence, use that influence to push legislation that suits their newfound position of power and influence, and of course, they'll be effectively exempt from any such legislation.
Someone has challenged my claim (naturally), and they're asking for specific powers that feminists gain and could abuse by perpetuating the "rape culture" narrative. I could just hypothesize based on my (albeit limited) knowledge of how authoritarian governments come to power, but I figured that specific policies that have been implemented as a result of feminists lobbying or putting pressure on the government would be more compelling evidence. Then I thought, who better to ask about such feminist policies than MRA's?
So what do you say guys? Any good sources/ammo you could give me in this debate? Or if you actually disagree with my reasoning, I'd be curious to know why.
