Kiwi here. I used to think about suicide a lot but more or less casually. Or just go to bed not caring if i was going to wake up ever again. I was in canterbury where suicide rates are higher. I felt trapped by my student loan on a degree i still don't have because i felt so lost in my third year, found studying difficult and failed many papers. Things can feel so hopeless and opportunities beyond reach and that's how I felt, as well as trapped by my student debt. I would love to see the price of studying heavily reduced and I think that would take a lot of pressure off young people. We're always told nz is such a great place to live and tend to dust the serious issues under the rug. I'm now travelling/volunteering abroad and it's great! Sadly I'm still trapped by my loan and, being overseas, the interest is increasing which is bullshit. I love being a kiwi but I shouldn't feel obligated to spend all my youth there or face financial penalties. I'm just ignoring that problem for now.

It's liberating to be off the island and realise all sorts of countries deal with things differently. No one told me you can study overseas more cheaply (I have an eu passport) and sadly I bought into a bullshit education system because I was too young and dumb to know better.

I wish more people would travel or live overseas before starting a career or studying. I know I've seen the light at least

New Zealand is going through market liberalization.

Which means more average men are under pressure, there are fewer safety nets and more average men are going to kill themselves as a result of that.

Its not just killing men.

This paper explains one way in which New Zealand’s free-market reforms have adversely affected its environment. Liberalisation of New Zealand’s economy has radically changed the determinants of agricultural export success, largely due to the elimination of subsidies to domestic producers, and of tariffs on imports. In this exposed agricultural milieu, the dairy industry has thrived; cow numbers have increased by over 50%, with commensurate increases in herd and farm sizes. With this rapid expansion has come increasing pollution of New Zealand’s waterways. New Zealand’s Resource Management Act 1991 is potentially capable of controlling these adverse effects; however, its implementation was slow and piecemeal throughout the 1990s. So, at the same time as production and pollution from dairy farming expanded, the efficacy of environmental policy was limited. The resulting implementation gap has put at risk the ‘clean and green’ image that is an important component of New Zealand’s agricultural export success.
