Men receive 63% longer prison sentences on average than women do, and women are twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.

Britton Campbell may not serve jail time after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2014 death of her then-boyfriend Justin Thomas Quintana.

Campbell, 21, was sentenced Friday in 30th District Court to 5 years supervision with deferred adjudication and a $1,000 fine.

Judge Bob Brotherton told Campbell he was basing his sentencing decision on her actions and those of Quintana that night.

"Either way, you get to go home today," said Quintana's father, Alan, in a victim impact statement. "We go home broken and without our son."

During his statement, Alan Quintana spoke of his son's life and his confusion about the sentencing.

"My son was a heck of a person and always offered to help anyone. ...We don't want any ill for you, but we wanted accountability. ... My son's life is not worth food stamps," the father said, referring to a 5-year jail sentence issued in the court he witnessed earlier in the day for a man convicted of stealing food stamps.

A May 16, 2014 Times Record News article said Quintana, a former Midwestern State University student, was shot just after 1:30 a.m. that same day in the 4100 block of Weeks Park Lane at the apartment complex. Then-PIO Sgt. John Spragins said Quintana was dead when police arrived at the scene following a "frantic 911 call." Spragins said Quintana was the only person living in the apartment.

Campbell was indicted for manslaughter by the Wichita County grand jury for his death after turning herself in to authorities on Nov. 19, 2014. A Dec. 31, 2014 TRN article said Campbell was interviewed by detectives overnight and released without an arrest being made.

"They were pretty much just playing with a gun and it went off," WFPD PIO Brandie Banda said in the Dec. 31 article based on the detectives' information. "It was a freak accident, but she was reckless in doing it."

If it was an accident, why did she wait 6 months to turn herself in? Why wasn't she there when they found the body??

Wichita County prosecutors were reportedly able to recover the Snapchat video that confirmed Campbell’s version of what happened on the night Quintana was shot.

She aimed the gun at him and pulled the trigger. That's one incredible 'accident.'

... Should've just quoted that articles source (which they linked) I guess.

Last month in a bench trial for punishment, prosecutor John Gillespie said recovered Snapchat video of the shooting was shown, and confirmed campbell's version of what happened.

She said she and Quintana went to a sports bar for a first date and he invited her to his apartment to see his guns.

After looking at and playing with guns she said Quintana said he wanted to take a Snapchat video of her pulling and pointing a gun she thought was unloaded.

The video shows her giggling and pulling the gun from the holster, racking it, then pulling the trigger, it went off, striking him in the chest.

Two idiots playing with guns that they assumed were unloaded and one of them ended up shot. So yeah, an accident (without the sarcastic quotes).

She said. She said. She said. And a video of her shooting the guy.

If she was a man, she'd serve some jail time like that evil food stamp theif.

A video that obviously fucking confirmed that it was his dumb idea... Notice how it is the PROSECUTOR that says the video confirmed her version. Or did you not bother to read because you just want the woman to be evil?

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It confirmed some of what she said. It doesn't mean her whole story is truth.

Snapchat video of her pulling and pointing a gun she thought was unloaded.

It proves she pulled the gun and shot him while he recorded it. It doesn't prove anything else.

Have you seen the video? Well, the prosecutor did so I think I'll trust his opinion over yours.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 8 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

The prosecutor didn't say the video proved every aspect of her story. It only proved that tiny part where she killed a man. And even if her whole account is 100% true, she's guilty by her own admission. Why no prison for her??? Would a man get such a great plea deal? Not if he stole food stamps.

Idk about you, but I think criminally negligent homocide is worse than stealing food stamps and probably more deserving of a prison sentence. And if she was a man you wouldn't be trying to excuse her.

I agree that women get lighter prison sentences.

What I don’t agree with is sending people to prison for accidents.

If this was a girlfriend or ex-girlfriend I’d be more inclined to believe that she intended to kill the man.

How much responsibility should the gun owner assume for giving a loaded handgun to a drunk 19 year old to play with? I think that is negligent behaviour as well.

r/feminism is that way, past the dumpster. Can't miss it.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It doesn't matter if she isn't evil. She should serve jail time. A man would.

[+]Caleb_has_arrived -6 points-5 points-4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Neither of them deserve jail time it won’t teach either anything! He should be fined to pay it back and she’s gunna have to live with what she’s done.

OK, find me a case where the same prosecutor recommended a prison sentence for a man in the same situation.

On an unrelated note, in the age of viral news stories, all of these local little paper outlets really need to more prominently display their state and not assume all of their readers are local. Midwestern State University? So... like Illinois? Oh wait... Wichita? So it's Kansas, right? Turns out this happened in Texas. Yeah, obvious, right?

[–]djmixmotomike 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Texas? No, not obvious. Also not surprised.
